Gratuitous Space Battles now on the iPad

Posted by Dave Seaman on Friday, 11 May 2012

Attention humans!
Have you spotted an unusually explosive ipad game in your star system lately? One that fuses the explodey fun of real-time strategy and tower defense games with custom unit design and pre-battle orders, but without all the mid-battle panic associated with controlling huge space fleets?

If so, you have probably seen Gratuitous Space Battles on the ipad!

Positech Games super popular (well over 100,000 life-forms have bought a copy so far) indie space-sim/management game is on sale in the app-store for those lucky humans that own an ipad.

If you haven't seen or played the game before, it's best described as a hands-off fleet-battle simulator. Unlike most strategy games, which often descend into arcade style click-fests the moment battle is joined, Gratuitous Space Battles is all about the pre-battle planning. You aren't a spaceship captain, but a grand-admiral, back at HQ designing the ships, assembling the fleets and issuing orders to your starships pre-battle. Once battle is joined, you have no direct control, and can only bite your nails/tentacles whilst watching the battle unfold over your subspace link to the explosion-festooned proceedings.

Because GSB is a game of dragging ships into battle-positions, and a drag-and-drop ship design system, combined with a lot of mid-battle zooming-in to watch your enemies explode, it seems to work pretty well on the touch-screen ipad.
