9th International Mobile Gaming Awards Announce Nominees and Open Voting

I'm assuming at least some of the nominees are indie games?!?

Marseille, France - The nominees for the 9th Annual International Mobile Gaming Awards (IMGA) have been announced. 52 different countries were represented by the 600 games submitted. This year with the expertise of 15 jury members consisting of both press and industry leaders, 57 games were nominated in six different categories and will move on to the final round of judging.

IMGA founder Maarten Noyons was particularly impressed by the submissions. "This year's submissions have been quite exceptional," he said. "We have never seen such a broad spectrum of games in the submissions. The jury reviewed hard core triple-A games, poetic indie games, educational games and a significant number of narrative games. Developers worldwide are bringing ever-increasing standards of quality and originality to gamers across the globe, and all 57 nominees are worth playing."

Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller Continues Today with "The Wise Monkey" for PC and Mac

SAN JOSE, Calif. - January 30, 2013 - FBI agent Erica Reed's hunt for a killer continues today with The Wise Monkey, the second episode of Cognition: An Erica Reed Thriller. This exciting four part series is developed by Phoenix Online Studios, the indie team behind the King's Quest spin-off The Silver Lining, with contributions from veteran adventure game designer Jane Jensen and renowned comic book artist Romano Molenaar. The Wise Monkey is available DRM-free for PC and Mac, both as a $9.99 standalone game and in a $29.99 "season pass" bundle, from http://CognitionGame.com/store.

Boston native Erica Reed has an advantage when it comes to tracking a killer: an unusual set of post-cognitive abilities that help her sense how a crime unfolded. She also has a score to settle with the murderer who took her brother's life three years ago. But vengeance takes a backseat in The Wise Monkey when Erica's colleague and sometimes lover, Sully, falls hostage to a rare female serial killer fixated on the gruesome mutilation of her victims. Only Erica's sixth sense can save him, but with the Wise Monkey sharpening her scalpels, time is running out.

"The first episode of Cognition was all about setting the stage for Erica's story: introducing her abilities, experiencing the loss of her brother, and establishing the problems plaguing the FBI's Boston bureau. As people who played it already know, that episode ended with a crazy twist. There's no turning back now," says Katie Hallahan, who designed and directed The Wise Monkey. "Now another person Erica loves is in grave danger, and she's at her breaking point -- another loss could be one too many. And the things she has to go through to save Sully from the Wise Monkey... let's just say it's intense."

Those who haven't yet embarked on this thrilling adventure are encouraged to visit pay-what-you-want site IndieGameStand (http://indiegamestand.com/), where Episode 1: The Hangman is currently on offer for a fraction of the usual price. (This deal will end on January 31.) Anyone who wants to play the rest of the series after purchasing The Hangman individually -- whether from IndieGameStand, the official Cognition website, or any of the online portals selling the game -- can upgrade to a season pass for just $19.99. Visit http://CognitionGame.com/upgrade for details.

Cognition's remaining episodes, The Oracle and The Cain Killer, are both planned for PC and Mac release within the next six months. The series will also debut soon on iPad.

Asylum Unveils Its Kickstarter Of Horrors

BUENOS AIRES, ARGENTINA - January 30, 2013. The highly anticipated horror adventure game has joined the ranks of Kickstarter projects with a campaign as wacky as it is creepy. After four years of production, the Senscape team aims to fund the final lap of development with the help of the community. Inspired by the writings of H. P. Lovecraft and building upon the success of cult hit ScratchesAsylum has recently enjoyed a new burst of popularity following a successful campaign on Steam Greenlight, after which it became the first game from Argentina to be Greenlit by Valve. Similarly, it happens to be the first game ever on Kickstarter from the country.

Featuring some of the most unusual Kickstarter rewards yet, backers have the chance to become permanent denizens of the Hanwell Mental Institute, the massive virtual asylum where the game takes place, by, among others, appearing as dead inmates in the morgue or being themselves residents of their very own cell. “The number one request from fans has been that they want to become part of this engrossing setting we have created,” said project leader and designer Agustín Cordes. “And we have listened.”

At the time of this writing Asylum is currently 13% funded in its first day.

Cell: emergence Updated, On Sale for $.99, and Submitted to Steam Greenlight

Today "Cell: emergence" Version 1.1 was released on Xbox Live Indie Games.  Available on PC as well, Version 1.1 serves new and casual players by adding visual tutorial screens that demystify the "massively reactive" game mechanics.

The new tutorial screens present the terminology needed to understand the biological simulation, and they explain the HUD, which implicitly defines the goals of a mission.

The "dynamic voxel" gameworld places high demands on players' ability to perceive and interpret.  In this new version of the game, players still face challenging levels and surprising organic reactions within the 1,000,000-cell gameworld, but they now can focus on finding a cure for the heroine's disease rather than deciphering the entire field of nanomedicine.

For the next week (Jan. 29 to Feb. 4), the 1.1 version will be on sale for $.99 at Desura (http://www.desura.com/games/cell-emergence).  The Xbox version will cost 80 MS points during this period.

A revised free demo includes visual tutorials as well as three complete levels (two more than the original demo):

The game has also been submitted to Steam Greenlight, where the developer has made an appeal to the community to download the game for a dollar and post an informed vote.

CBE software has Canceled Publishing Agreement with Lace Mamba Global

Disclaimer: This press release has been republished verbatim.  Indie Game News does not support or refute any of the claims made below.  It goes without saying that any indie developer signing a contract with a publisher, or vice versa, should approach the deal with caution and do everything in their power to make sure that the other party will honour their agreements.

-----

Brno, January 24rd, 2013, Czech Republic - CBE software s.r.o. has cancelled their exclusive publishing agreement with Lace Mamba Global ltd. CBE software would like to inform, that this step had to be taken due to the reason that Lace Mamba Global has breached the exclusive publishing agreement for the video games J.U.L.I.A. and J.U.L.I.A. Untold.

Lace Mamba Global ltd. has neither delivered royalty reports nor paid any of the money mutually agreed upon in the said publishing agreement for the period of 10 months. Two official letters were sent with an attempt to settle the situation peacefully. Neither of them however has triggered any kind of response. For that reason Lace Mamba Global is no longer allowed to publish videogames J.U.L.I.A. (PC) and J.U.L.I.A. Untold (iOS).

CBE software will now contact all distribution channels and inform them that they are no longer allowed to sell J.U.L.I.A. without a prior written distribution agreement with CBE software.

Jan Kavan, director at CBE software, comments upon the current situation: "It's an extremely sad ending of the past four years of our life. We've created the game using our very own budget without any external funding yet we were able to create a title we are really proud of. When well-known publisher, whom we have trusted so much, behaved like that, it was an extremely demotivating experience for us. Moreover we've handed them both games as finished products so there was not any risk involved for them. Such nefarious behavior had an absolutely destructive impact on our small independent studio. Unfortunately similar story just recently announced by Colibri Games (Tiny Bang Story) ensured us that it's not a misunderstanding and that we have to act."

To recover from this situation CBE software would also like to announce that J.U.L.I.A. has been added to Steam Greenlight.

"We plan to do a remastered version with changing things which were not all that well received by players and we will include a bonus soundtrack as a part of the Steam release. Even if you own the game already, please upvote J.U.L.I.A. there. Steam could help us survive the situation and recover from this unexpected blow. If we get greenlit, we will also issue a patch for existing J.U.L.I.A. owners which will add the remastered functionality.“, finishes Jan Kavan.

The Steam Greenlight campaign is located at:
