Wood Games 3D (Android / Browser) is out (and mini-review)

Wood Games 3D is an athletics game set in an outdoor medieval world - you compete in events like the long jump, sprint, shooting, hurdles, and one or two events that combine two of those basic styles - there are 7 events in all.  There's a browser version (needs the Java plug-in) and also an Android version There's an online high score table for each event, a daily world championship, achiements and challenges (although quite a few features are only for the Android version of the game).  Both the browser and Android versions are free.

I played the browser version for a while and it's quite fun, a lot like some of the old joystick-busting athletics games for the 8-bit and 16-bit machines, only this time it's your mouse that's going to get wrecked.  The events are quite nicely varied, the controls work okay, and I found that I was much better at some events than others.  The controls are simple but sometimes a little fiddly until you get used to them.  The graphics and music were good, though I did often get the feeling the the perspective of your character was wrong - he seemed to be lying face forwards on the floor rather than on his feet when he ran!

If you like retro style athletics games, and especially if you're very competitive and likely to stick at a game for a while until you get on the high score table, Wood Games 3D is a good little time-waster.

Podunk Studioz announce Jay and Dee: Gone in a Flash

Message from Dusty at Podunk Studioz:

"Jay and Dee: Gone in a Flash is going to be a retro style point and click adventure game, based on the characters of Podunk Studioz’s 8-Bit Podunk webcomic.  The game’s story will focus on Jay and Dee having made the greatest game ever; it has been stolen and they must gather evidence that it was a rival company that stole it.  The game will be released in flash so that everyone can get a chance to play it, and the game is set to be between 60 to 90 Minutes long.  The game will also use a very interesting game play mechanic called Dual Character control; usually in point and click games you have one character to control and one inventory to worry about, but in Jay and Dee: Gone in a Flash players not only need to be mindful of what inventory items your characters have, but players need to be careful which character has which item and where in the scene each characters is.  We believe that this will add a new and interesting dimension to the puzzles in Jay and Dee : Gone in a Flash.

The hope is to have Jay and Dee: Gone in a Flash online either towards the end of October or the middle of November.  We at Podunk want to deliver the best game we can, and hope that everyone will enjoy playing as much as we are enjoying making it."

Preview: Captain Morgane and the Golden Turtle

Captain Morgane and the Golden Turtle is an in-production adventure game for PC, Wii, DS and Playstation 3 by Steve Ince (most famous for his work on the Broken Sword games).  It features Morgane, a young girl whose sea-faring father goes missing, and who herself dreams of becoming a mighty sea captian, despite the fact that this is not seen as a viable possibility for a young girl.  I’ve played the preview build for a while now, and it looks good, though I have a few concerns (not sure how many are a result of it being the pre-release version though).

Captain Morgane features really nice graphics and good animation, though the main character moves a bit slowly and, considering she’s rather a tomboy, her extremely dainty walk seems rather out of character.  The music is nice, there seems to be a different track for each location, and as far as I could tell the voice acting was okay (it was a bit difficult to tell since adjusting the sound levels didn’t seem to be possible in the preview build, so the music level was always far too high to hear the speech very clearly).  There seemed to be some synching problems with the speech too, though these will no doubt be cleaned up before the game is released on 24th October. Sadly they’ve gone for the same sort of inventory control as Broken Sword: The Director’s Cut did, in that you have to drag inventory objects to wherever you want to use them on screen – personally I much prefer to click to “pick up” the object.

Still, there are some nice features to the interface too – it’s possible to have hotspots highlighted not just when you hold a key down but permanently if you want (space bar toggles this), and objectives / map are always accessible from the menu.  Other than that the interface is very simple – click on an object to bring up two icons, Interact and Look, and it all works fine.   There is at least one simple arcade sequence in the game (sword-fighting), not sure if there will be more (it looks like you can skip them if you want though).

Anyway, most of the problems I had with the game will probably be sorted out in the pre-release cleanup, and Captain Morgane and the Golden Turtle certainly looks like it will be a game most adventure game fans will enjoy.

Independent Dutch studio MeinMein announces first game Pink Planets and pre-release Building Competition

Utrecht, the Netherlands, 20 September 2011.

MeinMein is an independent game development studio based in Utrecht, the Netherlands, consisting of Meindert Kamphuis (doing game design and graphics) and his brother Gerbrand Kamphuis (doing the programming).

Currently MeinMein is close to finishing its first game ‘Pink Planets’. Pink Planets is a cute isometric grid-based sandbox puzzle game set in a pink universe. As a little hamster*, alone in space in an oversized space suit, you have to rescue your friends from surprising monsters by building cute and creative structures. And if you gather enough building blocks, you even get to build your own level, which you can easily share with your friends!

The game features a variety of interesting sandbox levels and is scheduled to be released for PC later this year.  Pink Planets' audio is designed by Kozilek, who is known for the mesmerising tune he made for Vlambeer's game Luftrauser.

Prior to the game's release there will be an online Building Competition Game which will launch on 30 September. By unlocking building blocks in puzzle levels, players will be able to build their own structures, which can be uploaded and voted for on the competition website. The creators of the three winning structures will get a free copy of the game. But the best part of the competition is that the winning structure will appear in the final game!

“In Pink Planets not everything you encounter is immediately explained. I do this on purpose,” says Meindert Kamphuis, owner of MeinMein and developer of the game. “When I played computer games as a small boy, I often attributed deeper meaning to the small animations in games, which in reality were but mere decorations. In Pink Planets I want to give players the same room for their imagination. And I hope we can give a taste of that in the Building Competition Game.”

More details will follow when the competition launches.
