Celebrate the end of 2012 by voting for your favorite independent games

Melbourne - November 30, 2012 - As another year comes to an end, it is time once again to begin our search for the Players Choice Independent Game of the Year.

After amassing a staggering 61,000 votes in 2011 which resulted in Terraria being crowned the eventual winner (Minecraft won in 2010), voting booths have been added to all game profiles on IndieDB. It is now up to the players to click the "vote" button and help us crown 2012's best.

Scott Reismanis, the Founder of IndieDB, commented "this is always our favorite time of the year, watching the nominations pour in, with the leaders usually only separated by a handful of votes. We cannot wait to unveil the Top 100 in 12 days and of course the No. 1 at the end of December. With some many games deserving of attention and accolades - we expect the outcome in 2012 to be interesting."

Drox Operative released

Dallas, Texas, November 29, 2012 - Soldak Entertainment today announced the availability of Drox Operative.

Drox Operative is a starship action RPG with warring alien races, fierce space battles, a dynamic, evolving galaxy, and co-op multiplayer for Windows and Mac.

Drox Operative can be purchased at:

Or try the demo at:

Eons ago the Drox ruled the galaxy through their mighty Operatives. These elite starship captains were trained to accomplish the impossible at whatever cost necessary. Whether employing stealth or brute force, they were always deadly. Using these Operatives, the Drox built a starlane system for quick travel amongst the stars, colonized and conquered millions of planets, and ruled the galaxy with an iron grip for over 100,000 years. Eventually realizing their Operatives were a threat, they attempted to assassinate all of them. They failed. The following Galactic Civil War was devastating.

Thousands of years later, the Drox are extinct, but the secretive Drox Operative guild lives on. They have learned their lesson though: loyalty to any one race is foolish. They now work for whoever can pay. And pay they do! Empires might span hundreds of planets and thousands of ships, but when a critical task arises, they still turn to an Operative.

In the new space race, the major races are scouting, colonizing, and expanding, trying to take over the galaxy by diplomacy, technology, war, or any other means their scheming minds can contemplate.

As a Drox Operative it's NOT your job to manage all of those annoying people, build thousands of buildings, play nice with your enemies, or balance the budget. It IS your job to pick the winning side and maybe even help them conquer the galaxy if you're being nice, more importantly though is to rake in as many credits as possible, well that and build the coolest, deadliest ship in the known universe. Not many screw with an Operative captaining a Dreadnaught!

Explore a dynamic and evolving galaxy
Explore a unique sector of the galaxy in every game, with different "monsters", ship components, quests, and even races
Fight in the galactic war between the various alien races
Battle hundreds of different enemy starships
Build the coolest and deadliest starship in the galaxy
Outfit your ship with thousands of components and crew
Adventure with your friends with co-op multiplayer

You can go to for more information about Drox Operative and Soldak Entertainment.

Indiefort giving 5% to a game designer's brain cancer fund. Countdown Bundle is live now!

I received this email from Tyrus Peace of Stttutter Games - under the circumstances I don't think he'll mind me reproducing it here.

Arizonan fantasy artist and hopeful game designer Daniel Somerville is struggling to pay for recent brain cancer surgery and ongoing treatment that will result in an estimated $450,000 in bills. A fundraising campaign has been started at to help pay for these costs.

Many have come together to try and help Daniel. Art and maps have been sold ( ), games have been made ( ), and live benefit shows have occurred ( ). Now Alexander Poysky of Gamersgate has been kind enough to offer 5% of the sales of their next Indiefort Countdown Bundle sale (live for the next five weeks at ), and I'm hoping to get both this bundle and Daniel some much deserved attention.

Daniel's art: (general art) (more fantasy/game-related art)

Many brain scans and a surgery later, Daniel's tumor has been removed and he's undergoing chemo/radiation treatments. This stuff is all very expensive and he was uninsured until November, well after his most expensive operations and treatments. The $450,000 estimate comes from the Brain Tumor Foundation ( ). Currently he's concentrating on being able to pay for his radiation and chemotherapy treatments, which this campaign has made possible for him.

Daniel is my friend and the dungeon master for my D&D campaign, making spectacular art, maps, and stories for us to play with. Before his diagnosis, he came back from Gen Con after showing his work to professionals, excited to start a career with his art, creating maps for tabletop games. I hope our efforts here can help him continue to pursue his goals as an artist and game designer and live a life less burdened with debt. Check for further information on his situation.

Free Demo and Kickstarter for Legend of Dungeon, a co-op Rogulike beat'em'up for PC, Mac,& Linux

Robot3kitty, the team behind  roguelike-like beat'em'up Legend of Dungeon, have been thrilled by the positive response to their new title, and as a result they have launched a Kickstarter campaign for the project.

There will be a free online demo available till the end of this campaign.  Though still a very early build of the game, you'll get to experience the gameplay firsthand, and try your luck at getting to the bottom of the dungeon.  You can play solo or cooperatively - which changes the strategy and feel of the game, and intriguingly is said to make death a little more interesting (I guess you'll have to play the demo to find out what that actually mean!!).

Mystic Mine is now Open Source

I got an open email from the developer of Mystic Mine:

Plenty of people have mailed me with the request to port Mystic Mine to some platform X (because that would be really cool!). Or to distribute Mystic Mine where it’s currently not available. But the sad truth is that I can’t put much energy in Mystic Mine because I’m focussing on RPG Playground. I feel sad about this, because it would indeed be cool if Mystic Mine received more attention.

Therefore I decided to release Mystic Mine as Open Source, both the source code and as much content as possible. All source code and content is now released under the MIT license at This includes:
  • All source code (mainly written in python)
  • All graphics (Blender 3D and Gimp files included)
Unfortunately the music and sound of the original game were bought under a royalty free license, and so they cannot be distributed here. Currently all those files are silent. I hope someone can find a proper replacement for these sounds and music files, so that the Open Source release of Mystic Mine becomes a complete game.
Commercially I don’t have much to gain from this, but there’s a huge list of things that would make me very happy:
  • My fans creating their own levels (There’s an ingame level editor that my friends and I used to create all those levels. Check the sources for hidden keyboard shortcuts).
  • Modifications, adaptions and improvements that I would never have thought of myself.
  • ’sudo aptitute install mysticmine’
  • Mystic Mine running on all kinds of different platforms.
  • The Open Source community receiving something back from me. As you probably know I’m a huge fan of Open Source. Mystic Mine was created on Linux using python, pygame, gVim, Blender 3D, The Gimp, Audacity, … . After receiving so much, it makes me happy to give something small back.
You can find all files at

AirBuccaneers - Multiplayer Airship Pirate Game

AirBuccaneers is a multiplayer game about Buccaneers and Vikings fighting against each other in hot air balloons armed with cannons (why has no-one thought of that before?!). The game has a very deep team work focus and provides a co-operation experience which can't be matched by any game out in the market at the moment.   It's one of the early Steam "Greenlit" games.   The game is being developed by LudoCraft, an independent game studio from Finland and we are currently working on their first big PC title, AirBuccaneers, aimed for release on Steam on 5th December. The game's Public Beta version is currently available for free to play.
