Kickstarter - is it all it's made out to be?

There's an excellent article on AdventureGamers.com about the ups and downs of running a Kickstarter campaign.  (A few days old but I only just saw it.)  Obviously it's written with adventure games in mind specifically, but the points made apply to any games that are looking for funding.

GameJolt - a resource for freeware developers

I'm new to the GameJolt community but so far it seems that everyone's on to a winner.  Though the forum's a bit dead GameJolt offers a free host / mirror for your games if you're a freeware game developer (in fact you can even earn a little from it!), a place to advertise your games through the blog - you can even automatically update your blog there using your RSS feed - and of course plenty of free games if you're a game player.

So far, so good...  check out the GameJolt homepage or my developer profile there.  As I have more experience of how good / bad this site is for various things, I'll keep you posted.  (I only found out about the place because Tino mirrored his Unga Needs Mumba game there.)

I'm planning on mirroring my Captain Disaster demo version there (well, after I check it's not against the rules!).  [EDIT - apparently is is.  Drat.  But Troll Song will still find a home there when it's released!]

Age of Fear: The Undead King - Release v1.5.1

Some news sent to us by long-time Indie Game News friend, Leszek Sliwko:

Age of Fear: The Undead King version 1.5.1 is available in Downloads section!

Changes:- New Experience/Evolve System - this could be real game changer!
Based on players feedback we have implemented a choice of unique attributes for every unit. In this version, attributes can be purchased for experience points (details are discussed here). That feature gives a tons of customizations' options for all units and introduces a totally new strategy layer!
We plan to use this system in sequel, therefore your feedback is much appreciated!
- Terrain Effects - we have experimented with animations for terrain (bubbles in swamps, water drops in caves, fog, fireflies, animated lava, lights, etc.). Let's be honest - AOF will not suddenly look like Diablo III orHOMM6. It's small improvement, but it should add to experience.

- few other bug-fixes and optimizations

Notes:
- We are still working on sequel (Age of Fear 2: The Chaos Lord). The most of features have been already implemented and we are currently working on content (story and game balance). You can read herefor progress update - I kind of hope we will be able to release it before the end of this year.

Cars and Friends - Puzzle Game for Boys 1.0 released for iOS

Katowice, Poland - Rainbow Stories today is pleased to introduce Cars and Friends - Puzzle Game for Boys 1.0 for iOS, their new animated jigsaw puzzle app for young kids. Each of the 30 different scenes can be set to one of three levels of difficulty: Easy, Medium, or Hard. Featuring puzzle pieces that double in size when touched, kids can create a large picture from small pieces that are presented just two at a time. The expansion of pieces, dragging them on to the picture, and placing them correctly or incorrectly are all animated actions with accompanying sound effects. The app also includes original, festive music.

At launch in landscape mode, Cars and Friends - Puzzle Game for Boys displays all 30 illustrations in Apple's eye-catching, Cover Flow View. Kids can scroll horizontally to pick the puzzle they would like to do. Once selected, the illustration fills the leftmost two-thirds of the screen. Pieces to the puzzle slide on to the screen from the right, and only two pieces are displayed at a time. Compared to the illustration, the colors of the puzzle pieces are deep and realistic, so when they are correctly placed over the illustration it remains clear which pieces are still missing.

When the child touches one of the two pieces, it grows immediately to twice its former size, and is exactly the correct size to fit in the puzzle. This innovation encourages children to recognize puzzle pieces by their shape and graphical content, independent of size. Pieces lock into place perfectly, and if placed incorrectly return to the pieces area on the far right. The app features a special snap-in algorithm, so that pieces automatically snap in to place when moved in to proximity of their destination. On completion of the puzzle, a fanfare is heard and all the pieces dissolve into a single, brightly colored image.

Another innovation in Cars and Friends - Puzzle Game for Boys is that each of the 30 puzzles can be solved at one of three levels of difficulty. At the Easy level the puzzle contains only six pieces, at the Medium level there are 12 pieces, and at the Hard level the puzzle consists of 16 pieces. In this way, kids can solve the same puzzle they have become familiar with, again and again.

Feature Highlights:
* 30 beautiful illustrations to solve
* 3 difficulty levels - Easy (6 pieces), Medium (12 pieces), Hard (16 pieces)
* Easy to use and friendly user interface
* Festive, original music
* Universal app optimized for display on all iOS apps

"Cars and Friends - Puzzle Game for Boys is a game the whole family will enjoy," stated Jakub Gozdz of Rainbow Stories. "Kids never get tired of figuring out these puzzles, and there are no pieces to get lost."

Language Support:
* U.S. English, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Polish, Portuguese, Russian, Spanish, and Swedish

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
* Requires iOS 4.2 or later (iOS 5 tested)
* Universal app optimized for display on all iOS devices
* 85 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Cars and Friends - Puzzle Game for Boys 1.0 is only $0.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Games category.
