Gateways, coming soon for XBox and Windows

Smudged Cat Games is announcing its latest game today,... Gateways! It’s coming soon for XBox and PC, check out the trailer:

Gateways is a 2D platform game set in the lab of an inventor called Ed following an outbreak of a number of his more "creative" experiments. Can you help him escape the lab?

Alongside the traditional platform elements such as jumping on enemies heads, spikes and moving platforms are the gateway guns. The gateway guns allow you to place two gateways on the walls, floors and ceilings of the lab so that when you pass through one you emerge out of the other. As progress is made through the game different types of gateway gun are introduced with different effects. After the basic gun, you acquire a gun that creates two gateways of different sizes, passing through one way shrinks Ed to half his size and the other way makes Ed grow to twice his size. Then you find a gun where one gateway doesn't just connect to the others location but also its time, allowing Ed to travel back in time and encounter earlier versions of himself. Finally, the last gun manipulates gravity so passing through allows Ed to walk along walls and on ceilings.

Gateways takes place on a single sprawling map rammed with puzzles and challenges. As power ups are acquired more and more of the map opens up containing more power ups and secrets. In addition to the gateway guns Ed will also find a torch letting him light up the darker areas of the map and a mirror which can be used to deflect lasers.

A sophisticated help system will help Ed along throughout the game. Every puzzle has a help point next to it where Ed can use power orbs to find out if the puzzle can be solved using his current power ups and abilities. If it can be solved and you're still stumped then spending more power orbs will provide you with the solution.

And not a mention of cake in site,... apart from this one.

Timeslip for Windows released (and it's free!)

Smudged Cat Games have decided to release a Windows version of the classic time travel game, Timeslip,... completely for free.

You can download the game here - http://www.smudgedcat.com/timeslip.html.

Timeslip was originally a Playstation One game developed with a Net Yaroze and released on an "Official Playstation Magazine UK" cover disk.  It's a time travelling 2D platform game where you are caught in a continual time loop, forever travelling back in time to encounter past echoes of yourself.  Whilst using your past echoes is the key to opening doors and progressing through the levels they must also be avoided to prevent causing a paradox.  Timeslip was the very first game to feature self co-op back in 1999 and was re-released for the XBox LIVE Indie Games channel featuring updated HD graphics and a fresh sound track with the ability to switch back to the original version for that retro feeling.

Dark Legends MMO announced for Android, iOS and Chrome

Spacetime Studios Sires Vampire Themed Mobile and Desktop MMO: Dark Legends

Third Legends Title Is Major Evolution in Casual and Avid Gameplay

AUSTIN, Texas – Jan. 26, 2012 – Spacetime Studios takes its mobile and desktop Legends franchise into a frightening new world with Dark LegendsPlayers will embrace the secret societies of vampires to challenge the hordes of undead, werewolves, demons and humans that hunt them. The title will be released for Android, iOS and Chrome in the first quarter of 2012.

Fans of the popular Legends franchise, Pocket Legends and Star Legends, will discover a gameplay evolution in Dark Legends that draws them even deeper into the experience. The combat system delivers fast paced, action oriented gameplay that includes new mechanics such as charge attacks and the ability to drain enemies. A wide breadth of solo and multiplayer content will also be available.

The most significant change is a much deeper focus on narrative. In addition to story communicated during the 3D multiplayer missions, players will periodically be given the option to complete quick action missions with a single tap. These missions use brief cut scenes to create an interactive storybook, where players experience the life of a vampire up-close and personal.

The company’s goal for Dark Legends is to combine casual, strategic advancement content with their award winning real-time 3D multiplayer system to create a blend of gameplay never before seen.

“With each entry to the Legends franchise we raise the bar for the pick-up-and-play MMO space,” said Gary Gattis, CEO, Spacetime Studios. “The changes between Pocket Legends and Star Legends were significant, but Dark Legends is a quantum leap forward in interactive storytelling.  Live the dark fantasy and play anywhere, anytime, anyone!”

Dark Legends opens with the player recently raised and under the direction of the vampire that sired them. The secret existence of vampires has been exposed and angry, misguided humans are uniting to exterminate the undead plague by any means necessary. Players must work with their clan to survive this brutal new world.

The previous Legends titles, fantasy Pocket Legends and sci-fi Star Legends: The Blackstar Chronicles have been downloaded more than seven million times, making it the world’s largest mobile MMO franchise.

Dark Legends with be shown for the first time publicly at GDC 2012.

The Indie Game Magazine Becomes The Next Official Media Partner of the A MAZE. Indie Connect Festival

Wilmington, DE, January 25, 2012 - The Indie Game Magazine (http://www.indiegamemag.com) proudly announces its conjunction with the A MAZE. Indie Connect (http://www.amaze-festival.de/home) festival as the latest official media partner. This announcement signifies a boost in international press coverage for Europe's biggest upcoming indie game focused festival. From igniting creativity through the sharing of ideas to the handing out of honorary awards, The Indie Game Magazine will expose the finest creative minds that Europe has to offer.

Independent games are our lifeblood at The Indie Game Magazine (IGM). Without them we would be sapped of creativity, bereft of spirit and left without that constant struggle to find meaning in the medium.

It makes sense then, to revitalize our passion and to share it with others. In fact, this remains not just a positive gesture but a necessity to realise our greater goal: to spread the word about the exciting world of indie games.

This is why we have founded a partnership with A MAZE. Indie Connect (Indie Connect). Established and recognised as the first Indie Games Conference in Berlin when it ignited its fire in May 2011, the Indie Connect Festival unites indie game developers from all over Europe to share their passion, knowledge and artistic vision.

Fueled by the many attending enthusiasts, Indie Connect is a means to enthuse the European indie game scene with an exchange of ideas and a meeting of talent. Presentations, workshops, game jams and awards provide an insight into the amazing mind of these indie game developers and work to kindle their creative expression. It is without doubt the bustling center, the fervent cusp of the 21st century's most dynamic and wondrous art form: computer games.

It is of no coincidence that Indie Connect takes place in Europe's most artistically exciting city; Berlin. The founder and director of A MAZE., and Indie Connect's creator, Thorsten S. Wiedemann; plants the festival's roots into the rich soils and the energy of the changing world, of which Berlin so markedly encapsulates.

The backdrop of Berlin provides Indie Connect with intensity, acting as an annual melting pot for the European indie game scene so that artistic, experimental and visionary games and their producers could be united and accentuated.

This is why IGM Magazine now joins as part of the league of media partners who aim to cover Indie Connect, along with VICE Magazine, GEE, Zitty and the local press. We all come together to expose the incredible hive of creativity that is the European indie game scene, to amplify its voice and to share the beautiful minds that form its being.

Our joining as yet another prestigious official media partner of Indie Connect will continue towards the goal of a greater and more diverse digital culture. We hope you will join us in appreciating what the European indie game scene has to offer.

ABOUT A MAZE.:

By combining courage for experimentation and joy in gaming, A MAZE. (http://amaze-festival.de/) celebrates the convergence of computer games and art. A MAZE. is more than simply a festival – it is a series of events as well as a conceptual format that offers a regularly emerging platform for interdisciplinary exchange. Creatives are encouraged to break down the conventional computer game and surpass established concepts of play.

ABOUT IGM:

The Indie Game Magazine (www.indiegamemag.com) is the premier source of news and culture for the independent gaming. Started in October 2008 and published bi-monthly by Mike Gnade, IGM has matured into a definitive voice for the indie gaming scene. Combining no-nonsense reviews, in-depth reviews and long-form features with the leading lights of the industry, the magazine, like the games it covers, is independently owned and fiercely independent as it strives to highlight the artists and community behind what it deems the most creative branch of the video gaming universe.

Indie Wii Game Review - Football Up

Now it's not all that often that I get a chance to review an indie Wii game - there aren't all that many of them around, and some of the ones people have requested me to review haven't been available on WiiWare Europe / compatible with the Wii outside America.  Football Up is available on WiiWare Europe for just 350 WiiPoints, and the exact same game is available on WiiWare North America under the name Soccer Up.

This is going to be a short review because there are only a few things you need to know about it.  Football up is a retro style footie game, something along the lines of Sensible Soccer, and fans of that era of game will enjoy it's arcade feel.  The graphics are nice enough and the music / sound effects are decent.  The basic gameplay is good, with 2 control mechanisms and it's pretty responsive.  You can use aftertouch and there are a couple of special moves you can perform (ie overhead kick).  The aftertouch controls are extremely sensitive and it will take a lot of practice to even begin to master it.

The options are pretty limited in terms of teams available and there's only one competition - although it's nice that you can make a team completely out of your Miis, which can result in some amusing moments in the replays.  I don't think relative team strength is taken into account (at least, I can't explain Scotland winning the world cup if it is!!)/  The main problem with Football Up is that the AI is absolutely brutal; after a number of games I have yet to score against an AI team, let alone beat one (losing 4 or 6 nil has been my default result!).  As there is only the one difficulty level, as a single-player game I couldn't really recommend it.  It's really designed as a multi-player game, the single-player mode (in its current form) adds very little value.

However as a 2 or 4-player game it's a lot of fun, so if you are likely to be able to play it with one or more other footie-mad friends (especially if you are of a certain age and get all nostalgic when people talk about games like Sensible Software and Kick Off 2), it would definitely be a worthwhile purchase.

New Poll

Just for a week, not directly related to indies perhaps (at least, not commercial indies), but still pretty relevant I think.

MegaUpload.com is no more.  Do you think this is a good thing or not?  Vote at the top of the page (underneath the logo that, if recent comments on the AGS forums are anything to go by, everyone hates!).
