The Mission Continues for Interstellar Marines

In the cold north of Scandinavia a small group of Danish dreamers is trying to achieve the impossible. They are making an AAA first-person shooter without the involvement of the big corporate publishers that are dominating the industry. The game is Interstellar Marines, an epic trilogy about mankind’s first encounter with another sentient species.

Interstellar Marines is the world’s first truly independent AAA blockbuster game. Instead of working under the tight reins of big publishers, Interstellar Marines is made with help from the community that directly supports ongoing development. By pre-ordering the game and unlocking special accounts, users are granted early access to a series of smaller prototype games released online as the development moves forward.

So far three games have been made available online, and are playable in a browser on their community website www.interstellarmarines.com: An interactive 3D tour called The Vault featuring several of Interstellar Marines’ characters; the advanced shooting range Bullseye where players test their skills against various targets aboard the military space shuttle AIV Kitty Hawk; and finally Running Man, a true first-person action experience where players face an onslaught of combat robots while training to become an elite marine.

As of this date, over 67,000 users have signed up for the dream and played one of the smaller releases. Each release offers high-quality production values brought to life in the powerful Unity engine. These playable slices provide a sneak peek of the Interstellar Marines universe, but at the same time players are helping to test and improve important core mechanics of the game, sharing suggestions and feedback that play a critical role in designing an epic trilogy that our fans genuinely believe in and want to play.

Interstellar Marines is the brainchild and dream of Game Director Kim Haar Jørgensen and CEO Nicolai Grønborg, who together came up with the initial concept during a family party back in 1993. It was not, however, until 2006 that development of Interstellar Marines began in earnest with the creation of Zero Point Software.

The ambition was always to make the most believable and immersive sci-fi first-person shooter on the planet. No photon lasers, no plasma-injected needle guns, and no impossibly bulky energy armors, but rather a realistic future where mankind is about to have its first historic meeting with another sentient species—with unknown consequences.

Interstellar Marines is about evolving the FPS with inspirations that the team has assimilated since the birth of the genre. The goal is a progressive step forward driven by compulsive interest in science fiction, role-playing, military realism, and respect for immersion. Interstellar Marines will connect players to a personalized action experience with satisfying character upgrades and dozens of weapons. A nuanced cooperative campaign (because playing with friends is awesome) will be anchored by compelling and unpredictable story twists, and competitive multiplayer gameplay will rival AAA efforts, while introducing memorable new elements.

So far no release date is set in stone for the roll-out of the Interstellar Marines Trilogy, however design and development continues on all aspects of the game — including more playable releases planned for 2011 and beyond.  We will continue to regularly post news, media, progress reports and development insight on the dedicated www.interstellarmarines.com community site, with contests and special promotions planned for the months ahead.

Blitz 1UP, the Indie game initiative from Blitz Games Studios, have today announced the signing of Purify Puzzle, an arcade puzzle game developed by Paper Child Studios. With original gameplay and a unique look and story, Purify Puzzle is set for worldwide release in February this year.

As you move through the haunting landscape you’ll be helped by Maximilian the vampire, the rebellious son of the king of the netherworld. We love it and we think you will too!"

Adds Michael Lubker, Paper Child Studios’ Producer: “We are very excited to have Blitz's support and expertise in bringing Purify Puzzle to market. We hope that it will bring success to our game projects current and future!”

PC Indie Game Review - Defy Gravity

Defy Gravity is an interesting arcade puzzle game that looks for all the world like a platformer, and plays like one for about the first three seconds.  Then the twist comes in - your player can shoot gravity fields that can either attract or repel objects.  The most obvious uses for these are to enable your character to jump longer / higher, reach places your jumping alone can't get you to, and make enemies get out of the way.  There are quite a few uses for your gravity wells though - it's up to you to experiment and find out how best to use them.  On most levels (as far as I can see) there is more than one way to achieve your goals, so the game has quite a flexible approach.

Defy Gravity looks nice and sounds good, and plays very well - animation is smooth, the controls are responsive (mouse + keyboard), the levels are well designed and the game will certainly give you a challenge.  Some levels look completely impossible to start with, but eventually you begin to work out strategies for getting past even the most imposing of obstacles.

If you like puzzle games with an element of action to them, you'll definitely enjoy Defy Gravity.

(To be honest I wasn't entirely sure what the plot had to do with it all, but that's in the best tradition of arcade games!)

AI War: The Light of the Spire Expansion Now Available as Game Hits Version 5.0

The Light of the Spire
Arcen Games is proud to announce the release of AI War: The Light of the Spire, the game's biggest expansion ever. Available now for $10 through ArcenGames.com and coming soon to digital distributors.

The expansion is packed full of new additions.  The "Fallen Spire" campaign brings in-game linear story elements to the title for the first time, and culminates in a whole new way to win. Players with minutes instead of hours should take to the new Defender Mode, offering bite-sized timed games against crazy AI aggression.

Light of the Spire also brings 180 new ships, including the powerful "Spirecraft" vessel class which stands as the second largest unit class in the game. New music from composer Pablo Vega, new AI types, map types, bonus ship classes, minor factions and quite a bit more packs the expansion to the brim. Prepare for a new war!

More information, screenshots, and a trailer can be found here, along with a comprehensive feature list: http://www.arcengames.com/w/index.php/aiwar-spire

AI War 5.0
Arriving alongside the LotS expansion is AI War 5.0, a massive update free to owners of the base game. Version 5.0 refines the title by taking the best of all past versions and blending them into the definitive AI War experience. While the game will continue to grow and evolve, 5.0 now serves as the foundation for the future.

With this update, nearly every combat ship in the game has been rebalanced in an effort to integrate all the new units added over the past year. Golems have been completely revamped and the AI have received major intelligence upgrades such as more proactive retreats, a network of core shield generators, and the new "stalking" mechanic where it lies in wait until the player is at their most vulnerable.

Players should also be pleased with significant adjustments to overall difficulty and the shortening of the early part of the game -- allowing you to "get to the good part" faster. Not to mention tons of performance improvements, as well as more of a general accessibility regardless of what level of player you are.

Interested parties can read all the additions, improvements and changes in massive detail here: http://arcengames.com/mediawiki/index.php?title=AI_War_-_5.000_Release

Updated Demos
Demos of both AI War 5.0 and Light of the Spire can be downloaded here: http://www.arcengames.com/w/index.php/aiwar-downloads

The demo can be unlocked into the full version of the game with a purchased license key.

About Arcen Games
Arcen Games entered the PC indie scene in 2009 with their cult classic AI War: Fleet Command, which was named the 40th best-reviewed PC game of the year by MetaCritic.  Their second year was a busy one, seeing the release of The Zenith Remnant, the first full expansion for AI War; Tidalis, an innovative block-based puzzle with casual appeal and hardcore depth; and Children of Neinzul, a micro-expansion for AI War with all profits benefiting the Child's Play charity, of which Arcen is a platinum sponsor.

Light of the Spire is Arcen's first release of 2011, but fans of the company are also excited about the upcoming procedural adventure game known as A Valley Without Wind.  Originally a one-man shop, Arcen Games has grown to have half a dozen part-time or fulltime contributors to its various titles.

Saint Paul, Minnesota - InfinitApps has released an update to Pyramid 13, its customizable solitaire card game for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch, making it available via the App Store to users of iPhone OS 3.x for the first time and providing other improvements.

Pyramid 13 is a clean and simple version of the popular pyramid solitaire card game which is easy to learn and quick to play. The game can be customized by playing with one of three different card styles: color-coded cards numbered 1-13, traditional suited cards with ace through king or a hexadecimal-binary style.

Pyramid 13 includes several high-quality backgrounds and the user can select up to three of their own photos. These backgrounds can be randomized, giving a new look with each pyramid played. Card backs can also be personalized with a favorite color or photo.

Game Center support is provided so users can compare high scores with those of their friends and everyone else playing the game. Users also are awarded achievements as they play.

The new update makes Pyramid 13 work on devices that are running iPhone OS 3.x for the first time, allowing users of the first-generation iPhone and iPod touch to play Pyramid 13. 1 And Only 1 Clue for iOS - Color Tile Matching Brain Builder Game

Herndon, Virginia - Independent developer Vivek Desai today is pleased to announce 1 And Only 1 Clue version 1.1 for iOS, his game where players must match the number and color of squares (that being the 1 and only 1 clue) from a group of pictures in colored squares. For example, if the clue is 1 red square, the player must look at all the pictures on the board in red squares, and select the one whose picture occurs only once (in a red square) on the board. Selecting a picture in a red square that also appears on the board in a blue square is an incorrect answer. Using text and audio, and two levels of play, the game is appropriate for young children as well as adults. With text and audio options turned on, the game identifies and announces the object matched, which will be helpful to younger children. 1 And Only 1 Clue may be played in single player mode, auto mode (the iOS device plays the game), or 2-player mode via Bluetooth. There are both easy and normal levels of play.

1 And Only 1 Clue is an ideal example of a very simple premise being fully developed and executed. In easy mode the board consists of a 4 x 3 matrix of pictures in colored squares. The pictures are all of the same theme or category: animals, electronics, emotions, fruit, instruments, landmarks, professions, sports, or vehicles. Each game consists of a number of rounds, and a round counter decrements as gameplay proceeds. There is also a game clock that increments minutes/seconds as play continues. Incorrect guesses add ten seconds to the clock. The goal is to complete all the rounds of the game with the lowest clock time.

The game engages the mind on two levels simultaneously: players must consider both color and number of pictures when making matches. If the clue is 1 green square, 1 red square, and 1 blue square, the player must do a color search and then filter the results using a number search. For example, the player may begin by locating all the pictures in a green square. Then, they may filter those results by locating all those pictures that occur in both green AND red squares. Finally, results are filtered to locate the single picture that occurs in green AND red AND blue squares, but NOT any others. This exercises and entertains not only short-term, working memory, but also object and pattern recognition.

Feature Highlights:
* Builds analytical and logical thinking skills
* Improves concentration
* With many colorful built-in themes, child learns (without even knowing) while having fun
* Pictures supported with audio and text
* Supports multiple languages
* Supports two player mode using Bluetooth
* Always new, there are a near infinite number of puzzle combinations
* Multiple levels of gameplay for a greater challenge

In normal mode the board matrix is 8 x 4, significantly more challenging than easy mode. With 32 different squares to scan and 15 rounds to play, each game can be quite challenging to complete in the quickest time. Boards are generated randomly, so the odds of playing the same game twice are extremely small. Games may be paused and resumed, and there is a high score library for each of the nine categories, as well as best overall time. Both sound f/x and the display timer may be toggled on/off.

"Logical and analytical skills, and short-term, working memory are important in solving all kinds of everyday problems," stated independent developer Vivek Desai. "1 And Only 1 Clue can help develop and maintain these abilities, automatically, while players are having fun."
