Ascent - on the up!

At the start of this month I posted about a hugely ambitious game called Ascent - a massive space MMO being made by just 2 developers.

With 11 days to go, they have made it to just over 60% of their funding goal.   Check out the Kickstarter Page and the Playable Demo.

NO FIREWOOD - A Survival Horror FPS that will make you never want to go camping again...

No Firewood is a Survival Horror FPS that puts a new spin on the genre and offers up a lot of new concepts. You collect firewood (Which is rare to come by)  to keep your campfire going, all while looking for items/food and warding off mutated animals, humans, and the unknown...

The game has a play style similar to Left 4 Dead but a sense of anticipation and fear like slender. We have crafted a game that is frightening to play in single-player and multi-player.

The open alpha is planned for release in a couple of months, and they have just launched a Kickstarter of the game.  The devs go into some detail about what they plan to do with the game, although there is nothing really to see of the game in action yet.

Stalked!

If you like games where you're scared out of your wits, the Stalked series might be your cup of tea. The game's creator, Hendrik Schiffer, describes them as having an "experimental emotional survival atmosphere", where the player's choices direct the flow of the game. Check out the games at the Stalked Website.

Smugglers 5: Invasion Launches on Steam!

Oct 16th 2014 – Niels Bauer Games (www.nielsbauergames.com) is proud to announce Smugglers 5: Invasion, a standalone expansion for the space trading/combat game. Smugglers 5 is now available on Steam at http://store.steampowered.com/app/326230/ GOG at http://www.gog.com/game/smugglers_v_invasion as well as their own website.

Smugglers 5 is the fifth installment in the turn-based single-player space trading game series. Will you be a greedy trader, an ambitious fleet pilot or a ruthless pirate? Board enemy ships, manage factories, conquer star systems and forge your own galactic empire - ultimately, your actions will have an impact on a galactic scale.

The Invasion expansion adds a new alien race with new ships, new skills, new star systems, an improved combat system, improvements to the game graphics including screen resolution and much more. There are significantly more stories to explore in each new system, and full combat carriers with bombers, interceptors, and escort vessels.  With hundreds of different skills, many starting professions, and the ability to change the course of the war, Smugglers 5: Invasion is the turn based answer to every star captain's dream.

Smugglers 5: Invasion starts where the original game ended. After years of civil war, the Federation finally emerged victorious, crushing all rebel activity. The galaxy looked forward to a period of peace, a chance to repair the damage of a long and bitter war.

Then came the Jalkath, a new alien race. To the humans, they looked much like the tigers of Old Earth, and they soon proved themselves to be every bit as cunning and dangerous. The newcomers were swift and brutal in their assault, deploying terrifying weapons and subjugating entire systems before their victims even knew what was happening. The Federation has rallied a defense against the invaders, as both sides struggle for dominance.

Now, war has returned to the galaxy. For the right kind of captain, it’s a whole new chance for fame and fortune. Will you fight for the survival of your race? Trade and smuggle goods to make your fortune? Or play both sides against each other for your own profit?

The game is available at www.nielsbauergames.com, www.gog.com, and can be  voted  on Steam Greenlight at http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=237691523.

Holy calamari! Save big on "SQUIDS Odyssey" tactical RPG through Oct. 30 (Wii U & 3DS)

The Game Bakers' delicious tactical RPG SQUIDS Odyssey has just gone on sale in Nintendo's eShop -- and it's a big one.

Through October 30, SQUIDS Odyssey for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS is marked down 50%-60% in every territory where it's available. That comes out to$5.99 in North America, £4.99 in the UK, €5.99 in other parts of Europe... you get the idea. With a sale like this, there's no better time to fling some Squid!

About SQUIDS Odyssey
The Squids' lush underwater kingdom is under attack by a gang of cranky crustaceans. In this quirky tactical RPG that has been described as "Angry Birds meets Final Fantasy Tactics," the heroes' squishy bodies become their best weapons: simply stretch a Squid's tentacles, aim, then let go to fling it into an enemy. While the ragtag Squid army swims through four kingdoms trying to halt the threat, 90+ turn-based missions, 15 customizable Squids in four classes (shooters, scouts, troopers, and healers), and dozens of stat-building helmets to collect and equip make SQUIDS Odyssey a casual role-playing game that's heavy on strategy and even heavier on charm.

But wait, there's more! Since SQUIDS Odyssey is a beefy game (~15 hours of gameplay plus a killer Pro Mode that doubles the experience), the developers have whipped up a complete strategy guide to help players master the game: http://thegamebakers.com/squids-odyssey-guide-book

The case for giving Endless Runners some love!

When a game (or entire genre) is simple and straightforward in appearance, professional and armchair critics alike feel compelled to dismiss the title or not give it its proper due. And that's a shame, because oftentimes the most "obvious" games can be deceptive in their difficulty and entertainment value.

This is especially true in the world of endless runner games, where players are (typically) tasked with the most basic action—run, run, RUN until you just can't do it anymore. At least, that's what it seems like you're tasked with once you begin playing. However, these games usually get more complicated and, in many cases, absolutely absurd as you continue to play. The straight-ahead concept remains the same—you seriously never stop running in some cases—but developers have worked on making the experience less repetitive.

You can thank indie studio Imangi Studios for that, as they pretty much revolutionised the endless runner concept with Temple Run. Here's a game that is just as simple as it is difficult, because good luck getting far without some decent (if not great) motor skills. Essentially, you take on the role of an Indiana Jones lookalike who's trying to avoid being captured/destroyed by a monster. And during your trek through the shape-shifting path out of the temple, you run through the jungle, under and over boulders and logs, down a river, and more.

Rightfully so, Temple Run has spawned a sequel, off-shoots, and plenty of games inspired by the idea of running until it's pretty much impossible. For those of you looking for like-minded titles that have taken the endless runner approach to entirely new levels, I recommend trying out some of the games listed in this Verizon Wireless article. In the post, the author breaks down five endless runners considered the best of the bunch, and I'm willing to agree on at least one of them.

That's PunchQuest, a remarkably fun game created by the crew at RocketCat Games. Rather than having the player simply progress through increasingly difficult situations, you have to beat the blazes out of whatever comes your way. You can jab, slam, and uppercut a number of retro-looking beasts and baddies, including bats, goblins, and even gnomes, all of whom want to take you out. Yeah, don't let that happen.

Another highly recommended endless runner is Bugs Vs. Aliens, a 3D title that we recently wrote about as it received its first big update. This strongly reviewed game is heavy on the physics and artificial intelligence, the latter of which isn't really stressed in a lot of endless runners. It is here, though, and rightfully so, as you must lead your army of bugs through battle scenarios where they face off against aliens. Again, this sounds simple, right? Yeah, well, good luck getting far with that mentality, because developer Keemba Studios (their site redirects to the game page) put in serious work to ramp up the difficulty as you progress.

What's most intriguing about any potential criticism of the endless runner genre is that its forefather—the platformer—is recognised as one of backbones of modern gaming. Without the platformer, we wouldn't have so many classic games and franchises that it would be impossible to begin listing them all. And as any gamer knows, the platformer has clearly taken on a number of different qualities as it's evolved over the years. With that in mind, it'll be interesting to see where its little brother, the endless runner, goes in the near future.

This is a guest post by Jared Harris. When he's not coming up with a new gaming-related article, Jared can be found looking for the next best indie game. Lately, he's been hooked on endless runners.

Approaching Infinity

Approaching Infinity Is Now Available For Pre-Order!
Explore A Science-Fiction Universe Of Infinite Possibilities!

Wilmington, NC, 16 October 2014

Science-fiction gamers should begin to clear their calendars, stock up on their favorite energy drinks, and prepare to lose themselves in a universe of endless gaming. It is with great excitement that Shrapnel Games is pleased to announce the upcoming release of Approaching Infinity from developer Ibology.

Approaching Infinity is a single-player, turn based graphical sci-fi rogue-like game set in a unique and truly infinite universe; no level caps, no map limits. Using the classic trope of a man and his starship the player begins with a captain and his vessel. Initially this vessel may seem like nothing more than a galactic scow, but over time components can be upgraded, skilled officers brought on board, and eventually fame and notoriety will follow.

The amount of adventures one can have is limited only by the player's desire. Within space itself asteroids can be mined, pirates evaded, SOS beacons discovered, and more. Even exploration provides a reward, as data on the unknown can be sold. Your starship will encounter planets, drifting derelict starships, and alien embassies. Planets can hold treasure or death (or both). Away teams can discover ancient star temples, ruined cities, or monsters in the darkened corridors of a floating hulk. There are twelve alien races to interact with, each with their own quests. A full crafting mechanic is included, along with a nifty 'pay it forward' feature whereas a player can invest credits into future games.

As a rogue-like Approaching Infinity contains procedurally generated content (meaning every new game is different), permadeath, the ticking clock of oxygen usage on hostile planets, and an achievement system. Yet Approaching Infinity is also amazingly approachable for newcomers to the genre. Permadeath can be turned off, there are in-game tool tips and a tutorial, and gameplay itself is smooth and intuitive.

"I love rogue-likes, especially their heavy use of procedural generation for maps, monsters, and items," remarked Bob Sanders of Ibology. "But true rogue-likes generally only appeal to a certain hard-core group of gamers, due to their inherent difficulty, huge list of commands, lack of graphics, and use of permanent death. I wanted to make a classical rogue-like that would appeal to modern gamers and let them enjoy the things that I find so rewarding about the genre. I set the game in space because that's the first place my mind goes, but also because there are very few sci-fi rogue-likes. I am happy to say that Approaching Infinity has met all of my initial design objectives and more!"

Thanks to the idea of a truly infinite design a single game can last as long as you want the story to continue. Multiple victory conditions also allow true endings, including one that should bring a smile to fans of the rogue-like genre.

Full modding support means that Approaching Infinity is really Approaching Infinity +1. Enjoy turning the game into your favorite sci-fi franchise, all without the need of coding experience.

The rich retro-graphics of Approaching Infinity are provided by David Gervais (famed author of many rogue-like tilesets) and a full original soundtrack by noted musician ectogemia.

Approaching Infinity will be available for both Windows and Mac operating systems, both as a download and as a physical product. Currently Shrapnel Games is taking pre-orders for this hot new game. Please pre-order today by going here: http://www.gamersfront.com/store/approaching-infinity.html

Armillo - exclusive for Wii U

The wonderfully named Fuzzy Wuzzy Games have developed an exclusive Nintendo Wii U release called Armillo.

It's a platformer that combines 2D and 3D gameplay with some puzzling elements through various stages that you visit as you travel through the different planets. It offers classic gameplay similar to Sonic the Hedgehog, Super Mario Galaxy, and Mega Man.

Armillo is a unique, fun rolling platforming game with a sci-fi parallel universe theme.  It features a massive amount of gameplay elements. There is the regular 3D worlds followed by a bonus stages on the moon. Then, there is the evil parallel universe and secret 2D speed-run inspired levels.

The star of the game features a space armadillo named Armillo. He’s not a typical armadillo as he’s capable of blasting off to space in order to travel from planet to planet. He’s joined by his little blue critter friends and his brother. His world is invaded by a group of enemies called the Darkbots.

Features:
·         Roll, jump, and boost through multiple spherical worlds.
·         2D worlds, inspired by speed runs, are hidden throughout the 3D worlds.
·         Play a world where all four seasons exist!  Or a retro-inspired world!
·         Enter the Parallel Universe on each world and escape before time runs out!
·         Exciting power-ups littered throughout the worlds!
·         Battle bosses in their very own worlds.  Chase, then destroy them through their multiple stages of attack!
·         Lots of fun puzzle elements, including puzzles that are to be solved between the two parallel universes.
·         Collect orbs and use them in the in-game shop to boost Armillo’s powers
·         Supports off-TV play
