We Did It! Eternal Chrysalis released (MAGS November 2013 entry)

That is, Selmiak and myself (CaptainD) - we decided to enter the November 2013 MAGS competition (make a game in a month), and by the skin of our teeth we managed to get our entry finished.

Thankfully the madness has now ended!  We want to polish and expand on the game later, but this is what we managed to do in a month - enjoy!  Made with the wonderful AGS of course.

Poll Results - "Indie Bubble"

We asked 'Do we currently have an "Indie Bubble" that's going to burst within the next couple of years?'  You replied:

Definitely
  5 (12%)

Probably
  10 (25%)

Definitely Not
  6 (15%)

Probably Not
  12 (30%)

No Idea
  6 (15%)

Opinion was split fairly equally, with slightly more thinking that the bubble will not burst (or, perhaps, that there is no "bubble" to begin with).  The biggest vote was for "Probably Not", but the second biggest was for "Probably" - only 27% thought it was a definite yes or no.  15% had no idea.

So it looks like our readers are split fairly equally between those who think the bubble will burst or not.  I hope our cautiously optimistic voters are proven right over time!

Cedaria: Blackout - new IndieGoGo campaign, looks really interesting

"What’s the longest you’ve been without electricity? An hour? Two? A day? Whatever you’ve had to deal with, the island of Cedaria probably has you beat - it’s been several months now, and the end is nowhere in sight."

This game looks very interesting indeed for several reasons, check out the video below for some of them:

Cedaria is a top-down 3D adventure game in a Middle Eastern steampunk setting. It features crafting, an extensive dialogue system and multiple dynamic endings that are affected by how you play the game.

The game takes place on an island in an alternate reality, some time at the end of the 19th century. As a player, you will be returning to your homeland, Cedaria, after several years of absence, having heard that the island has flourished under the patronage of the one and only Phoenix, a brilliant machine unlike no other, invented by a certain Lawrence Audlington who thought electrical cables were too old-fashioned and unbecoming, thus giving birth to a wireless method to distribute electricity. You’re under the impression that your island has become an epic place, prosperous, brightly lit and exceedingly busy. So it comes as a shock when your steamboat nudges the docks of Angel Wharf and all you see is darkness.

Ugly, stifling darkness.

As you poke about, you learn that someone has sabotaged the Phoenix, and the whos and whys of the case still remain a mystery, and you soon realise that the many changes the island underwent during the last few months have already started to affect you… you are trapped, just like everybody else. The only way out? Fixing the Phoenix of course… only after you find its ten missing parts that have been scattered, one way or another, all over the island. Piece of cake.
Or is it?

Your decisions, no matter how simple, will determine how everything plays out. If you play your cards right and assemble the Phoenix, you may be able to reconcile the different segments of the population and become a hero. But then again… there’s no rule forcing you to be “good”.

Features:

Several Storylines: There are a number of storylines in the game; this increases replayability and offers more dynamic and choice-based endings.
Who-Dun-Its: The storylines revolve around who or what sabotaged the Phoenix, and you will have to find clues leading to the identity of the culprit, rather than just find and assemble the machine parts.
Crafting: You will be able to craft items that will help you in your quest to restore the Phoenix machine to working order.
Dialogue System: Our dialogue system offers extensive conversation trees with multiple outcomes in every interaction. Since this is a choice-and-consequence game, dialogue plays an important part in the final outcome.
14 Zones: The island has 14 unique zones that you are free to explore at your own leisure without having to get any pesky achievements beforehand.
Multiplayer: Multiplayer is supported throughout the game; Cedaria plays equally well in both singleplayer and cooperative modes, and includes common tools such as a chat window and a lobby to facilitate multiplayer

Fundraiser started just yesterday, 14 backers already, a reasonable funding goal ($7,000) and just $10 for a DRM-free digital copy of the game... and it's steampunk! I have a very strong feeling this one will be successful.  Check out the Cedaria: Blackout IndieGoGo Page.

News on the upcoming game "Cyberganked"

News sent by Robb Sherwin about an interesting new game he and the rest of the Calrops Magic Video Game Company are working on, Cyberganked.

Cyberganked is a retro, cyberpunk CRPG being developed by the Caltrops Magic Video Game Company. (The Caltrops Magic Video Game Company consists of Robb Sherwin, Jon Blask, Randy McLellan and Rob O'Hara.)

The idea behind it is that RPGs like the Bard's Tale, Wizardry and Wasteland were a perfectly fine genre that just disappeared. While all of them have had remakes and sequels, we like the RPGS where you wander around a city and have the combat in the right-most window. We've also picked a style of graphics inspired by the IBM PC/PCjr's CGA display. There are only four colors in the entire game.

Our big news is that we have spent the last two Octobers shooting actors and actresses! Randy McLellan is a haunted house designer, and we have brought in a number of models to his haunted house for the game. Players can select from these actors and actresses to represent their characters in-game. We've got over 20 people in the game for this, with the possibility of expanding at a later date.

We used the text adventure language called Hugo to create Cyberganked.  The engine is pretty much finished at this point -- character creation, combat, healing, the quest system.. all of it is implemented. We've started working on various programs that act as spells would in a fantasy RPG. For instance, one of the programs you can run in-game is the infamous DONKEY.BAS. The original BASIC game had you hitting the spacebar to make a car avoid slamming into a donkey. In Cyberganked, the program is modified slightly: it wirelessly causes a nearby car to crash into your enemies, for 6-36 points of damage.

We don't have an expected release date yet. We have two of the 25 levels finished and are busy implementing the rest. Cyberganked will be released for Windows, Linux and OS X.

Image before the CGA treatment,

There are plenty of enemies to be found. We've tried to get away from stereotypical RPG enemies by asking ourselves who we'd like to take a poke at. Here are some examples:

Domino Arena Available For the PC and Mobile Tablets

TAMPA -- November 26, 2013 -- Gamieon’s Domino Arena is now available for the PC and mobile tablet devices! Players have sixty seconds to paint as many falling domino jewels their color as possible while stopping opponents from doing the same.

Domino Arena is the fourth mobile game released by Gamieon, and follows a line of popular games which include Hamster Chase, Hyperspace Pinball, and Tiltz. Gamieon was established in 2004 as an Indie game development studio, and is operated by its sole multi-talented developer Christopher Haag.

Domino Arena is a competitive game where players must paint as as many radiantly jeweled dominoes their color as possible while their opponents attempt to do the same. In each level is a path of falling dominoes, each one colored by the player who owns that domino. When dominoes fall onto other dominoes, they become the same color. Players have only a minute to make as many dominoes their color as possible by creating new paths for them to fall, and by blocking paths that their opponent is using.

When not playing against the computer, a player can compete against up to three other people around the web on GameJolt and Kongregate, or around the kitchen table with the upgraded edition on the iPad or Android tablet!

Player scores are uploaded to online leaderboards so that everyone can compete for the top score. More time playing and more wins mean a higher rank!

Domino Arena is available for free on the PC, and can be downloaded for free on iPad and Android tablets (Gingerbread or better required) as well. Mobile tablet players can upgrade from a free twelve level, single-player version to having twenty levels and multi-player support for just $0.99!

New Screenshots from "Moebius"

Moebius (http://www.moebiusthegame.com) is a third-person mystery adventure from Jane Jensen, the creator of Gabriel Knight and Gray Matter. Funded by a successful Kickstarter campaign, Moebius is the first adventure game Jane has completely overseen since Gabriel Knight 3 in 1999.

Malachi Rector is a genius. With one glance he can size up artifacts, and even people, to distinguish a genuine treasure from a cheap fake. This talent has made him rich in the world of high-end antiques. But it also gets him in trouble. When a secretive government agency enlists Malachi for an unusual project, he realizes that there's more to his uncanny talent than he knew. His discerning eye, his aloof personality, the childhood trauma that shaped who he became -- all are historically significant. And Malachi's about to meet a man in his travels who holds the key.

Coming in Early 2014
Versions for PC, Mac, and Linux are planned for release in early 2014, with iPad and Android following a few months later. If you want to review Moebius, let me know and I'll get you on the list. We'll have more news about the release date and review copy availability after the holidays. (We also have a PC preview build available now if you just can't wait!)
