2 Indie developers announcing Hungry Lizards - Univeral iOS Game

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania - Basic Function LLC today is proud to introduce Hungry Lizards 1.1 for iOS. Hungry Lizards is an homage/remake of Atari's "Frog and Flies" (also on Intellivision called "Frog Bog"). Meet the hungriest of lizards, Spike & Lizia. After the great bug famine of 2013 these two have been traveling the globe (and beyond) in search of any little bug they can get their grubby tongues on. It won't be easy, this famine is far reaching and the local lizards are defending their turf. How many can you catch before the sun goes down?

"My friends and I played against each-other all the time on the Atari and when I wanted to make a 2 Player iOS game Frogs and Flies immediately came to mind. Quick review of Skyward Collapse

I've never played a game quite like Skyward Collapse - it's part Populous, part Civilisation, and part... I don't know, like being on a see-saw!

The basic concept is that you have mighty powers to bestow on both sides of a battle - the opposing camps will continually fight each other whatever you do.  You place buildings, units, mythological creatures, even gods later in the game, can manipulate the landscape on a vast floating continent - for both sides - and you have to keep the balance.  You need to reach a certain score to at turns 30, 60 and 90 to keep playing - if one side gets too strong and annihilates the other, you lose.  If the sides are too weak to inflict much damage on each other you don't score many points, and again you lose.

Ah, I hear you say, all you need to do is give each side exactly the same thing each turn and they'll stay equal.  That's impossible, for a few reasons; firstly the sides don't have equal military / mythological strengths, so you have to take into account the side you're controlling and their units.  Then there are bandits - the come and attack whoever's nearest.  Then there are Woes - things that can affect either or both sides, which can change the playing field massively.

Then you also have the three ages - firstly the Age of Man, in which human units are the more prominent, then the Age of Monsters, where more mythological creatures might be available and even lesser gods; finally the Age of Gods, where more powerful gods (these, along with the creatures, are typically from Greek or Norse mythology), which can perform acts that really give an advantage to their side.

As a turn-based strategy game it can feel a little sedate at times, particularly in the early goes, but things soon heat up and if you're not paying attention you can easily make one or two little mistakes that can really give one side the upper hand, and in the space of a couple of turns take many more turns to rectify.

It's a balancing act where all the variables are changing constantly.  It's a really interesting game idea and, with tons to unlock and several difficulty levels, also multi-player mode (which I haven't been able to try out yet), Skyward Collapse is a unique game that will keep strategy fans busy for a long time.  I think you need to be a fan of turn-based strategy already to fully enjoy it - I'm not sure you'd have the patience if not - but certainly if you've even enjoyed the Civilisation series and similar games, you'll find this game both familiar and very, very different.

Franchise Surpasses 260m Play Sessions

Spacetime Studios’ Games Exceeds 250 Million Play Sessions
More than 64 Million Hours of Gameplay

AUSTIN, Texas – May 29, 2013 – Spacetime Studios’ titles have amassed more than 250 million play sessions. Spacetime players also log engagement far above industry average, spending more than twice the number of hours playing Legends titles than the average gamer spends across all mobile games in a month.

The typical Spacetime player spends an average of 33.5 hours per month on Spacetime’s titles, almost 3 times as much as the average iOS player’s total monthly gameplay and four times more than Android players. iPhones players spend about 12.3 hours per month across all games while Android players spend around 8 hours per month on average according to Arbition Mobile.

“A quarter of a billion play sessions is a significant milestone, but what really excites us is the engagement,” said Gary Gattis, CEO, Spacetime Studios. “Spacetime’s players have logged more than 7000 years of game play. That is longer than recorded history!”

Spacetime Studios has released four mobile multiplayer titles beginning in 2010. Collectively Pocket Legends, Star legends, Dark Legends, and Arcane Legends have been downloaded more than 20 million times.

Black Talons announced - new RTS game

Indie development studio Camel101 have announced the development of Black Talons, new real time tactics game set in a sci-fi universe, featuring a mercenary commander trying to prevail in a ravaged star system, for Windows, Mac and Linux.  It's another incursion into the universe created in their previous game Gemini Wars.

Key features

  • Persistent and customizable squads.
  • Deep campaign mode. The actions of the player directly affect the balance of power on the system. There is one main objective to achieve, but there's much more to do.
  • Customizable Battlecruiser. The Battlecruiser serves as the base of operations, and can be customized with weapons or infrastructures that will boost the squad numbers, teleport soldiers or even bombard the battlefield.
  • Faction relations. There are a number of neutral minor factions in the game. These factions will have missions available for contract work. When the player completes missions for a certain faction, the relations will improve with that faction. On the other hand, completing missions against a faction will lower the relations with it. Having good relations allows the player to train or buy units unique to that faction. Having bad relations will make that faction randomly attack the player during missions.
  • Upgradeable and unique (per class) skill tree for all units
  • 5 worlds with different environments and weather conditions that directly affect the battle: rain, fog, snow, ionstorms and more insane stuff.
  • Different unit classes with specialized roles: Recon, Tactical, Assault, Support, Engineer. Each class can carry a different set of weapons and has its own abilities. Powerful mechs can enter the battlefield with salvaged or bought equipment and weapons.

Skyward Collapse - released today!

Well, has been / will be released, not entirely sure...

Anyway, a fascinating game by all accounts.  It's kind of a mixture of Populous and Civilisation, except the goal is to maintain a balance between the two sides rather than lead one to victory.  A proper review soon... but looks very good so far.

We're absolutely certain we can deliver a PvE experience that will live up to everyone's expectations and be a blast to play and explore. On top of that we're going to strive to deliver the Econo-Political structure discussed in the Kickstarter event, adding dynamic quest and political relations to the PvE framework. New Twist to RPG Dungeon Crawler, Puzzle Based Combat

DUNGEON OF ELEMENTS MASHUPS TILE MATCHING WITH RPG DUNGEON CRAWLING

Indie Studio Creates Gateway Game to Bring Casual Players to RPGs

LEXINGTON, KENTUCKY -- May 20, 2013 -- Dungeon of Elements, merging an RPG dungeon crawler with classic tile matching mechanics, delivers an engaging and quite different gaming experience that can be enjoyed by both core and casual players.  Indie game studio Frogdice plans a July launch.

In Dungeon of Elements, players take on the role of an alchemist exploring a huge world for rare elements. They will battle monsters in 45 different environments while gathering materials and basic gear. Back in the lab, they perform experiments that unlock recipes for items based on the four elements: Earth, Air, Fire and Water.

The hardcore RPG fan can wallow in awesome gear, leveling up and crushing bosses. The casual player can delight in nostalgic, match 4 style tile matching puzzles, collecting pets and a branching storyline.

Dungeon of Elements takes place in the world of Primordiax - a fantasy world shared by all of Frogdice's games. This dates back to Threshold RPG, a text MUD RPG launched in 1996 that is still enjoyed by thousands of players.

The game reflects Frogdice’s design philosophy of taking casual game elements and merging them into core game genres.  The studio's goal is to appeal to core gamers while also creating a gateway to introduce casual players to more core games.

“We love playing RPGs and we really want to introduce new people to the genre with Dungeon of Elements,” Michael Hartman, CEO & President, Frogdice Games, explains.  “The tile matching puzzle mechanic is fantastic for combat because it is familiar and inviting to casual players, but as any hardcore player can attest, it can be used to create extremely complex and engaging gameplay.”

Frogdice is reaching out directly to RPG and casual game fans with a Kickstarter campaign that will give them early access toDungeon of Elements. The company has self-funded the development and the title is almost complete.  Kickstarter funds will be used to do the final polishing of the game as well as hire a sound engineer to add music and sound effects.

Frogdice estimates backers will receive their copy of the game within 30 days after project funding, a full month before it goes on sale to the public.

Game features:
·         Match-4 combat inspired by some of the most classic puzzle games of all time
·         Deep crafting system where recipes are unlocked through experimentation
·         Hundreds of gear options
·         Collecting pets, bestiary
·         Achievements
·         Highly customizable character creation
·         Branching storyline where choices change the game
·         Huge world to explore with 45 different environments

PuzzME: puzzle becomes social

The rules are always the same: putting together the pieces to reassemble the final picture. The classic jigsaw puzzle is a game that fascinates millions of people around the world and today it can be played on smartphones and tablets ...

Puzz-Me has a time limit to complete the various tables and the player can choose three different difficulty levels. The more he goes up, of course, the more time decreases, the tiles become small, numerous, and everything is more complicated!

There are 30 tables, some of them can be played freely, for others it’s necessary to have accumulated enough experience points. These points are credited to the player at the end of each game and they vary according to the difficulty.

During the game players have a small magnifying glass that can be useful to place faster the tiles in the right place. However there is also the Training mode that allows to play with no time limits.

At the end of each game, if the player wants, he can share the result on Facebook and Twitter. All Puzz-Me’s tables are works of artists Gloom82, Ivanandreevich and Lindelokse, belonging to the digital community deviantART (www.deviantart.com).

Puzz-Me is the first app developed by Indie Construction, a small indie Italian studio focused on casual games.

Puzz-Me is already available for free on Google Play (in May also on the AppStore).
