Chain Word for iOS - Change a Letter at a Time to Create Chains of Words

Posted by Dave Seaman on Thursday, 1 December 2011

Preston, United Kingdom - SyGem Software today is pleased to introduce Chain Word+ 1.0 for iOS, their new word Game where players start with a three or four-letter word and then make new words from it, one letter at a time. The player can Add, Remove, Change, or Swap any letter in the original word, repeating the process to continue making new words from three to seven letters long. Uncommon letters have higher values, and score multipliers increase with each word made. Competition play enforces a ten-second limit per word, but the limit is adjustable up to two minutes (or no limit) for more casual play. The one-person game challenges the player to change and re-arrange letters quickly to create new words.

Like all well conceived games, Chain Word+ is easy to learn, but difficult to master. Gameplay is simple. The player begins with a three or four letter word (three words are chosen by the game at the start, and the player selects one of them). The goal is to modify the word to create a new word.

Players can Add letters (e.g., change "tin" by inserting an "h" to create "thin"); Remove letters (e.g., change "then" by removing the "h" to create "ten"); Change a letter to a new letter (e.g., alter "thin" by changing the "n" to an "s" to make "this"); or Swap two letters around (e.g., alter "not" by swapping the "n" and "t" to make "ton"). The game continues until the player cannot make any more words, or runs out of lives. One life is lost each time the timer runs out.

Creating a new word increases the player's score multiplier, while making an invalid word resets that multiplier back to one. Words must be between three and seven letters long. During gameplay, all of the current words in the chain are displayed at the bottom of the screen. If the player attempts to re-use a word already in their chain, this word will be highlighted. Pressing one of the control buttons will show some instructional text, along with a Cancel button, allowing the player to change their mind about the operation they were planning to perform.

There are more than 28,000 words in the game's database, so even the most obscure small words are included. There is a Word Browser function, where users can quickly look at all of the words in the database, discover how many potential words are possible in any situation, and also obtain word definitions, where curious.

Feature Highlights:
* Start with a 3 or 4 letter word
* Add, Remove, Change, or Swap letters to make a new word
* Repeat!
* Online global high-score table
* Review all of your past chains
* More than 28,000 words to choose from
* In-game help reference
* Requires both strategical and tactical gameplay to achieve high scores
* Play against the clock for competition play, or longer than ten seconds for casual play

When a competition, ten-second per word, game is completed, the score is submitted to the SyGem Software global online high-score table, complete with all game data. Players can also tweet their score via iOS 5's integrated Twitter connectivity. Once a score has been submitted, the position in the high-score table will be displayed. If the submission fails for any reason (perhaps the player lacks an Internet connection), the game data will be saved, and the game will try to upload it again during the next startup. At any time, players can view all of their completed "Chains" (successively modified words that appear like charms on a bracelet). Players can also find their top position on the high-score table by pressing the "My Scores" button on the high score screen. This allows users to find out their current best rank.

The game timer can be adjusted from the Options screen. It can be turned off, or adjusted in 10 second intervals up to two minutes. However, only a value of 10 seconds (the default value) will allow the score to be submitted to the online high-score table. The other values are considered "practice" modes. Although players are creating short words, the ten-second limit exerts considerable pressure during gameplay, and it takes some time to become accustomed to the rapid pace at which players are required to think and act to complete a turn in just ten seconds.

Device Requirements:
* iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
* Requires iOS 4.0 or later (iOS 5 tested)
* Universal app optimized for display on all iOS devices
* 13.5 MB

Pricing and Availability:
Chain Word+ 1.0 is only $0.99 (USD) and available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Games category. A free version with limited functionality, Chain Word 1.1, is also available.
