Indie title Squid Drop released to Stellar Reviews - But Poor Sales

Oslo, Norway - Indie game Squid Drop receives accolades from the press but makes no impact in the App Store. Despite top scores from several reviewers, and being picked "game of the day", twice - Squid Drop is still likely to lose the developer money.

Squid Drop for the iPhone and iPod touch was released last week to stellar reviews. In the brutal market of the App Store this is no guarantee for success; as Squid Drop's independent developer Nor Eagle can testament to: "We don't want to complain, as Squid Drop has met with an extremely positive response from the press and gamers alike. We are no strangers to failure, and at least this time around we created a title people truly enjoy." said T. Benjamin Larsen, Nor Eagle's megalomanic CEO, developer, and complete staff. "We had hoped that we would at the very least make back the money we have spent on marketing, and of course we hope that might still be the case." he said.

Squid Drop is a high score game starring a cute Squid avoiding dangers. The developer has earlier claimed that if offers more variety than most games in the genre, and reviewers have agreed: Touch Arcade described it as "A Fun High Score Game Starring an Adorable Squid. Squid Drop is a really enjoyable game." App Advice stated that "...if you liked Doodle Jump you'll fall in love with Squid Drop". "Challenging; surprisingly deep and expansive... Must Have." was Slide-to-play's conclusion. The game has received top marks from App Vader, AppPicker and Slide-to-play to mention but a few. It has been named "game of the day" at both and Germany's It has received favorable reviews from all corners of the world.

"We're a bit dumbfounded" said Larsen. "This is our first experience with this kind of press, and we didn't know what to expect. We have sold around 6-700 copies worldwide. This certainly isn't bad but we've only managed to make a sizable impact in France where it has entered the top 25 in a couple of sub-genres. In the rest of the world it is basically invisible. Normally this will mean the sales will dry up when the reviews are no longer on the front page of their respectable sites. It seems very likely that Squid Drop will end up losing us money even without including work-hours into the equation. Nevertheless, we have started work on the first update and if that doesn't succeed? Well, it's always the next title." he laughed.
