Missiles Away: Nuclear RTS, First Strike Now on Steam

Zurich, Austria - May 31, 2017 - Blindflug Studios, a developer known for creating games focusing on real dilemmas taking place in the world, Cloud Chasers (immigration), Airheart (overfishing), is pleased to launch First Strike: Final Hour, a fully optimized PC and Steam game from the already critically acclaimed mobile version focusing on nuclear warfare.

The PC version includes new control systems, a graphical upgrade and Steam support. The game also features an increase in strategy options with double the amount of super weapons and a brand new Diplomacy Mode, allowing players to form non-attack treaties with superpowers and stab them in the back.

To have a better understanding of the reasons behind the thought-provoking First Strike: Final Hour, Blindflug Studios has spoken about the elements behind the project and what went into creating the PC version, watch the dev diary.
"Sadly, war is very much part of our world every day, and we're pleased to bring First Strike: Final Hour to PC to reach a different audience to that of those who play the mobile version", said Moritz Zumbuhl, President & CEO, Blindflug Studios. "As much as the game focuses on a serious topic threatening our daily lives, First Strike is still a lot of fun to play, which through this medium we hope the message gets across to people of a very grave and real hazard."
First Strike: Final Hour is priced at $11.99 / £8.99 / €11.99 and comes with a 30% special launch discount on Steam.

About Blindflug

Blindflug Studios is a five-person independent game studio from Zürich, Switzerland. The studio has a passion for mixing beautiful, immersive games with a core of real-world dilemmas and politics to create new, unexpected titles in the process.

They established this formula with their debut title "First Strike", creating a nuclear war-themed first strike strategy game which was a big hit among critics and on the app store. In the three years of their existence they have since followed up with a rogue-like about migration called "Cloud Chasers" and an airplane game about overfishing named "Airheart."

Lawrence Lessig teams up with Klang to build the political framework of Seed

AI-driven MMO receives backing from Greylock Partners (Discovery Fund), Joi Ito, and David Helgason
  • It has been announced that the Harvard Law Professor and activist, Lawrence Lessig, has teamed up with the Berlin-based independent game developer, Klang, to construct the political framework of the up-and-coming AI-driven simulation MMO, Seed.
  • Lawrence Lessig will be working with Klang to develop Seed’s in-game political structure, which will be a defining moment in online multiplayer gaming.
  • Seed is a continuous, persistent simulation where players are tasked with colonizing an exoplanet through collaboration, conflict, and other player-to-player interaction.
  • Using unique gameplay based on managing multiple characters in real-time, communities are built even when players are logged off, allowing the world of Seed to be a living, breathing entity.
  • With over 30 years’ combined experience working on MMOs EVE Online and Dust 514, Klang holds a deep-rooted understanding of designing and operating persistent worlds. This experience will be applied to develop Seed’s large, player-driven world.
  • Also joining Klang and Lessig on the project is the renowned 3D animator, Eran Hilleli, who will be leading the art direction of Seed. Working on a variety of projects, Hilleli has earned acclaim for his signature art and elegant animation style.
  • In addition, the project has received financial backing from Reid Hoffman (Greylock Partners via Discovery Fund), David Helgason (Unity), and entrepreneurial investor Joi Ito.
  • Klang will leverage this financial backing to grow the studio and complete the development of the first internal release of Seed. The aforementioned stakeholders also join Klang backers London Venture Partners (LVP), and Adalsteinn Ottarson (Riot Games).
  • Seed is being built in partnership with distributed computing startup Improbable, and is building Seed on Improbable’s SpatialOS platform. Improbable’s technology allows the creation of massive simulations – “virtual worlds” – at a far greater level of scale and complexity than previously possible, which are also able to support more simultaneous users. Klang is also a part of the SpatialOS Games Innovation Program, in partnership with Google Cloud, which recognises and supports groundbreaking games built on SpatialOS.
  • Klang plans to start opening up an external playable version of Seed in early 2018. In the meantime, MMO fans can discover more about Seed via the project’s website: seed-project.io.

Nordic Game 2017 breaks all records

30 May, 2017
Malmö, Sweden
Nordic Game 2017 breaks all records
The fourteenth edition of the Nordic Game conference took place in Malmö, Sweden on 17-19 May, with colleagues from the region and around the world celebrating the Nordic games industry and a passion for games. This year's event also broke all previous records: over three days, more than 2000 NG17 attendees met with their peers, participated in talks by over 150 speakers and shared their knowledge, projects and passion.

The 2017 program included many highlights, like the philosophical "fireside chat" featuring Fumito Ueda and David Polfeldt, intense tech sessions by “INSIDE” creators from Danish Playdead and in-depth talks from Anita Sarkeesian, Brie Code, Ralph Fulton, Ste Curran and many, many others.

MeetToMatch business matchmaking was another tremendous success story at NG17. A whopping 2079 meetings were held, cementing Nordic Game's reputation as one of the world's absolute hotspots for games business. This year's Investing in Games Summit once again connected a range of selected game companies with leading global investors, and the second annual Publisher Market helped many exciting new game projects find potential partners.

From a Nordic developer’s perspective, NG17 confirmed yet again that the region’s industry continues to expand in "high gear". The sold-out Expo floor was filled with new and upcoming Nordic games, among these eight titles nominated for the annual Sensation Award. NG17 attendees were able to play all of the nominated games and vote for their favourites, with “Morkredd” from Norwegian Hyper Games declared this year's winner.

Thursday evening, right before the annual gala dinner (served to over 900 sitting guests), featured the 2017 Nordic Game Awards. “INSIDE” from Danish Playdead dominated this year's ceremony in the Unreal Theatre, winning in four categories including "Nordic Game of the Year". Denmark’s "Hitman", "GoNNER" and "Clapper" from Sweden and Norwegian "Owlboy" were also among 2017's prize-winning games. Celebrations continued late into the night, as over 1000 people joined in the renowned music, "marioke" and more of the Nordic Party at Slagthuset.

Friday, 19 May featured the debut of "Discovery Day", created in cooperation with Copenhagen Game Collective and spotlighting new, talented and innovative game makers from the region and around the globe. Besides memorable talks curated especially for Discovery Day, 40 of the "freshest" games were on display in the "Discovery Showcase". The absolute highlights of the day-long program were the Sensation Award, won by popular vote by Norwegian “Morkredd”, and the Nordic Game Discovery Contest finals. After a several fierce live-pitch rounds, Finnish “Ocmo” went on to take the prize as this season's Discovery Contest "Game of the Year".

The Nordic Game team would like to thank all of the great people who joined us for three unforgettable days last week, all of our exhibitors who brought the NG17 show floor to life, all of our awesome partners who supported us through thick and thin, and importantly, our fabulous sponsors who helped make NG17 not only possible, but our best event ever.

The team sincerely hope to see all of you again for NG18, 23-25 May 2018!

Startropy - A Space Faring Sci-Fi Adventure Game

Startropy puts you in the role as the Captain of humanity’s first starship capable of FTL travel. Your task will be to explore the universe to discover strange new worlds, and then befriend (or blast) the aliens you meet.

Features:
- A Lucasart-style graphic adventure where you can explore, talk and interact with the world.
- Away team missions will have you assign different crewman to explore hostile planets to gather resources, and sometimes enter “dungeons” for special quests.
- Space combat that emphasises tactical choices over twitch reflexes, and sometimes feature environmental hazards and other quirks.

Trailer:

If you’ve ever played Star Control 2 then you’ll have a pretty good idea of how the game plays out: You’ll be able to freely explore the universe in your ship, gathering up resources so you can upgrade your ship to explore further out, and on the way you will encounter crazy and colourful alien civilisations that will have a major “quest” involving them.

The plan will be that each quest will have a cool sci-fi plot kind of like an episode of Star Trek, featuring lots of dialogue, puzzle solving and exploration. You will be able to have your say on the quest’s outcome and/or ethical quandary, which will also have an effect on the game’s overall storyline.

It's seeking support on Steam Greenlight, and there is also a Playable Demo available.

Deep Sixed - A Space Survival Adventure - on Kickstarter

Deep Sixed by Little Red Dog Games is a space survival game where players are given a defective spaceship and a large nebula to map with plenty of mysteries to reveal. As you explore, things will go wrong on your expeditions and you will be expected to make command decisions. You can conduct a distracting and extensive repair, or implement a temporary make-do solution so you can focus on what’s happening outside. You can attack nebula creatures head-on, or study their habits and hope to avoid their attention. Perfect journeys are impossible, and players will find themselves building upon and applying a core set of basic engineering skills to address competing priorities.

This game comes without an undo button. There will be no savescumming. Your ship stays with you from start to finish, and if something breaks, it'll stay broken until you figure out how to fix it. In this game, everything matters: using duct tape to seal a pipe in your first mission can come back to haunt you in your last.

The nebula you are exploring has many procedurally generated mysteries for the ambitious explorer, and a diverse ecosystem of intergalactic fauna with their own predator, prey and scavenger roles.

As a court-mandated involuntary employee of a ruthless megacorporation, you will be sent into the breach time and time again in the hopes of earning your freedom. Your ship will also contain an artificial intelligence unit with its own objectives that promise to surprise and entertain.

The Deep Sixed story is told through cutscenes that occur between missions, through e-mails sent and received in the game’s space-station hub, and in-situ as the Pilot discovers something interesting in the nebula. These narrative vignettes weave a thoughtful and compelling tale of friendship and compassion under unexpected circumstances inspired by classic works of science fiction.

Check out the Kickstarter Page for more details and of course to support the game if you think it looks interesting!  $10 snags you a copy of the game, among other rewards.  Deep Sixed is in development for PC, Mac and Linux, with mobile formats anticipated to follow early next year.
