New family-friendly puzzler for Android released - "Bitter Plants"

In Bitter Plants, you take on the role of a worker bee, trying to collect pollen for your hive. To succeed, you have to solve the Riddle of the Flowers for each backyard you encounter. Standing in your way are angry grasshoppers, deadly beewolves, and meddling humans. Your demanding queen bee needs that pollen, though, and she's doesn't tolerate failure!

Bitter Plants is a fun, mind-bending puzzle game played on a hexagon-grid. As a worker bee, you collect pollen by visiting areas of the backyard. When you visit an area, you plant seeds that grow in that area and all surrounding areas. You have to be careful, though -- too many flowers in one area will cause all the flowers to wither and fade away. If that didn't make things challenging enough, you also only have a limited number of seeds for each yard -- so you have to plan your journey carefully. Grow flowers exactly where the queen bee demands and you can move on to the next yard.

But that's not all! Bitter Plants also includes:

- Builder Mode that lets you Create Your Own yard puzzles and challenge friends!
- Story Mode that lets you follow the early development of your hive. Solve the puzzles to unlock the story!
- Bee Politics! Vote on your favorite yards, or reach the top of the leaderboards with your own fiendish puzzles!
- Hero Collector! Can you find the super-rare Brayden Thorne, or the elusive Thahynna Silentstar?
- Unlimited Undos and Hints!
- much, much more!

Bitter Plants is a relaxing, fun-filled puzzle game that is kid-friendly, but can challenge children and adults of all ages!

Get it from the Google Play Store.

Poll Results (itch.io)

Disappointingly, but perhaps not entirely surprisingly, half of our respondents (from 22 gamers) had not even heard of itch.io.  22% had purchased a game from them, and another 6 had never purchased a game but had at least heard of them.  Hopefully more gamers will be aware of them soon...  (Of course I didn't ask if people had downloaded a free game from icth.io, and there are plenty of free and "pay if you want" games there, so some of those 6 may have got games from itch, just not paid for them.)

From the meagre set of 5 developers who responded, only one had sales in the 200-499 bracket, with the other 4 all selling less than 10.  Again I didn't word the question very well perhaps - this could include zero sales.

At any rate, the responses haven't filled me with hope, so I have a request to #indiegame fans - please retweet or otherwise share games you've found and enjoyed on Itch.io and help make it better known!

Loot Rascals Takes Off for PlayStation 4, PC in Q1 2017

LONDON - May 25, 2016 - Loot Rascals, a roguelike strategy experience with collectible card game elements and a retro sci-fi aesthetic, launches on PlayStation 4 and PC in Q1 2017. Developed by Hollow Ponds, a veteran team comprised of many of the same individuals who worked on Hohokum and an Adventure Time animator, Loot Rascals will be available to demo in the PlayStation booth at E3.

The objective of Loot Rascals is to escape from a distant hostile planet, but eccentric aliens, robots and monsters stand in the way. A.I. controlled holograms of other players may also attack, depending upon in-game decisions.
Loot Rascals has permadeath - when a player dies they lose all equipment, represented by cards. However, when an enemy kills a player, the fiend loots a single card. When another player defeats that same enemy, they win the card, and are given the altruistic option to return it to its former owner or keep the card for themselves. If they choose to return it, a hologram of the card's previous owner will join the game, and help the giving player for a period. However, if they kept the card, that hologram will attempt to hunt down the new owner and kill them.
Cards provide special abilities, buffs or alter the three core stats: life, attack and defense. A limited inventory for cards makes Min-Maxing a character essential for success. Unwanted cards can be converted into tokens, the in-game currency, which can be spent replenishing health or using special abilities.
To overcome each procedurally-generated level, divided into hexagonal tiles, players explore to find each stage's exit. Movement from one tile to the next takes a single turn, for which enemies also make a move. When the player and an adversary meet on a tile, a turn-based battle ensues.
Loot Rascals' humor is brought to life in a vivid animation style reminiscent of classic cartoons like He-Man and The Jetsons.
"Loot Rascals combines the deep strategy of a roguelike with deck-building card game mechanics to create something wholly original and incredibly entertaining," says Ricky Haggett, Founder and Lead Designer, Hollow Ponds.

Square Enix Collective Features BFF or Die

BFF or Die by Honey Tribe Studios is to be featured by the Square Enix Collective for thirty days.

The Square Enix Collective is a showcase website for new and upcoming indie games. One game is picked each week to go through a month long feedback process where community members can leave comments and interact with the developers. They also vote yes or no to the question “Would you back this project through crowdfunding?

The London based Honey Tribe Studios are still developing BFF or Die. Earlier this year they had a successful campaign on Steam Greenlight and were approved after only 6 days with a positive response from the Steam community. They hope the Square Enix community will also respond well to the unique co-op offering in BFF or Die and help lead them into a successful crowdfunding campaign later this year. The game has already been Greenlit.

The mechanics and strategic abilities in BFF or Die are unique. The list below summarises the gameplay without spoiling the surprises.
  • You are in a darkened maze
  • Whether in single player or multiplayer mode, one character can control an alien flash-light while other characters explore the map. You must collaborate to stay alive and win.
  • A variety of hazards and challenges will try and defeat you.
  • As the levels progress, different tools and items are unlocked. Different levels require different strategies and abilities.
  • Mazes are procedural and will reconfigure when re-attempted. They cannot be memorised.
  • Strategy is dynamic. If you are in a losing situation, change tactics in real time.
  • The struggle is real ;) Some levels will get properly hard but you always feel you can beat them if you figure out the optimal strategy for that level.
  • Players/characters need each other in order to survive and win. No single character can do it all by themselves.

AppGameKit HTML5 version goes live

The Game Creators today launched the AppGameKit HTML5 version – a significant release which adds yet another dimension to the already successful development engine.

Lee Bamber, CEO of The Game Creators, said, “HTML5 is the latest version of Hypertext Markup Language, the code that describes how web pages look and operate. More crucially, it's the first version which fully supports native execution of 3D games content, which means no more plugins to install. With the new version of AppGameKit, you can now export your creations directly to HTML5 compatible files which can be run locally or uploaded to a server, allowing your users to play your apps and games instantly through their browser. Thanks to the WebGL, a component of HTML5 technology, you can even run 3D games under hardware acceleration and optionally switch to full screen to create a smooth immersive experience for everyone.”

The Game Creators Development Director, Rick Vanner, said “Combined with a host of new commands, functional tweaks and bug fixes, version 2.0.19 continues to expand the AppGameKit universe with the capabilities you need to create awesome applications across multiple platforms.”

Towerbots (http://www.appgamekit.com/HTML5/Towerbots/Towerbots.html) is a great example of an AppGameKit HTML5 game, produced by Blendman (www.dracaena-studio.com).

The Game Creators used AppGameKit to develop Driving Test Success Theory, Hazard Perception and Highway Code apps for UK publisher Focus Multimedia, deploying them onto the App Store, Google Play, Amazon, Mac Store and Blackberry World - all from AppGameKit’s executable code. These Driving Test Success apps are now one of the UK’s #1 ‘Learning to Drive’ apps.

Monsterville / Farmer's Handbook

Out of the (admittedly very few) BMT Micro sales from this site, a whopping 60% of them have been for two particular products - Farmer's Handbook - Our Love Will Grow Guide and The Monsterville Handbook - Madam Extravaganza Guide - both guides for games by John Wizard Games.  So, in case you're looking for them, here they are!

Captain Disaster - voiced game and eBook released

Captain Disaster in The Dark Side of the Moon has now been fully released, and is available from GameJolt as freeware.  Enjoy!  (Well I hope you will... you can hear me simultaneously doing a bad Brummie accent and a bad American accent, what's not to love?! :-D  All ratings / comments etc on Gamejolt much appreciated!

Also released is an eBook on itch.io, containing the 11 short stories that served as the original inspiration for making the Captain Disaster games (Death Has a Million Stomping Boots still in production, and going to have a big announcement about that pretty soon!).  It's also available as a free download, but if anyone's feeling generous and wants to help me out (and / or particularly likes the eBook / games), you can name your own price or make a donation to one of the cryptocurrency wallets given on the information page.

Review - Demetrios: The BIG Cynical Adventure

Bjorn's apartment - this is the neatest part of it, probably.
Demetrios: The BIG Cynical Adventure is a comedy point and click which is loosely a parody of the Broken Sword games, but definitely has enough about it to stand up in its own right.   You play the role of  Bjorn Thonen, an antiques dealer in Paris, who receives a mysterious call warning him of something, dismisses it immediately, and then gets knocked out in a robbery.  The game is first-person but somehow feels more like third-person when you’re playing it – you don’t see your character walking around the locations but when you talk to someone, you get extremely expressive, well-animated close-ups of Bjorn and whoever he’s talking to.

The cartoony graphics are marvellously drawn and very well animated, so even though the backgrounds are mostly static, the many interactions on each screen make it really feel alive.  The music is great too, and the sound effects... well they’re pretty good, although also sometimes pretty gross.  My only real complaint about Demetrios is the amount of toilet and gross-out humour it contains.  Well that and some profanity, though considering the over 15,000 lines of dialogue in the game, there really isn’t that much.  There is plenty of humour otherwise that will have you smiling or chuckling.

One of the mini-games in action.

The game is divided into 6 chapters and apart from one small section where you play as Sandra (Bjorn’s girlfriend... sort of), you always play the role of Bjorn, who is quite happy to do incredibly stupid things (sometimes repeatedly).  Some of the humour stems from the multiple ways you can die or end up in prison – the game always goes straight back to the point before that straight away though, finding intriguing ways to die or be incarcerated is like a badge of honour here!  (It’s also involved in the achievements, and points gained towards unlocking music, concept art and mini-games.)  There is a lot of fun to be had, although the part where you played as Sandra felt like a missed opportunity – that section was small, very linear, and not nearly so much fun because even though she’s an airhead she refuses point-blank to do suicidal stupid things.

While humour is obviously a key part of the game, the plot once you get into it is good, and in fact has a plot twist right at the end that borders on genius.  In fact Chapter 6 had my wife and I laughing out loud a few times, even if gameplay-wise it wasn’t as strong as the rest of the game.  Also it was the only chapter where I felt that the game really came across as truly “cynical”.  Bjorn's exchanges with Sandra's repulsive 8 year-old daughter Caroline are sometimes very funny, although again sometimes pretty gross.

Is this funny, gross, or both?  You decide...
In each scene there are tiny cookies to be found, which if Bjorn eats (and he will eat virtually anything!), you can get a hint.  The puzzles vary quite widely in type and difficulty, and I think I used about 12 out of 88 cookies (a couple of them simply to check the hint system, which is very good, and the others because I needed them!) – the game took me 9 hours to complete and I had managed to get just over half of the achievements.  There is a personal message from the game’s developer when you complete the game, which is a nice touch.  There are some mini-games scattered throughout the adventure, most of which are pretty fun.

In true Broken Sword style, you have to do a bit of travelling in this adventure.  There are a few digs at Broken Sword and adventure games in general, but you don't already have to be a point and click fan to enjoy this, it's really a very accessible and slick interface and everything is adequately explained that needs to be.

All in all Demetrios: The BIG Cynical Adventure is a superbly made game, and will appeal to almost all adventure game fans.  The crude humour I wasn’t keen on but despite this, it was the first game in a long time that really had me hooked, I was really eager to find out what happened next.  It's all the more impressive considering it was made by a solo dev!

The land that the tourist trade forgot...

Tongue-in-Cheek Oil Boom Simulation, Turmoil, Leaves Early Access for Full Steam Release on June 2nd

Amsterdam, 20 May 2016: Dutch game studio Gamious announced today that its visually charming, humorous take on the simulation genre, Turmoil, will be released for PC on Steam on June 2nd after a year in Early Access. Drawing inspiration from the historic 19th century oil rush in North America, Turmoil received a total of 23 updates based on community feedback while in Early Access and garnered a 90% approval rating from Steam users. Now the full game comes to PC on Steam for $9,99/€9,99/£6,99.

“We are extremely grateful to the players who played Turmoil and provided feedback to make the game even better throughout Early Access”, said Jos Bouman, Creative Director of Gamious. “The community not only motivated us with their incredible enthusiasm, but also inspired our team to come up with big improvements every other week. We know that thanks to this collaboration we have something truly entertaining to offer that players will love”.

Turmoil is a simulation game set during the 19th century oil rush in North America. By prospecting for oil, players earn money and then as towns grow up around them they can acquire town shares in a bid to beat out competitors to become mayor. Since launching on Steam Early Access a year ago Turmoil has evolved and grown well beyond its originally anticipated scope thanks to community feedback and enthusiasm. A larger campaign and gameplay additions such as the natural gas mechanics and stock auction have been added to the final version to offer players a more robust and humorous simulation experience.
