"Number Rescue" released

Number Rescue is a little pet project of mine, partly to teach myself AGS scripting, and partly to make something that would challenge my little girl's maths abilities while being a fun game to play.  It also introduces a few very basic point and click adventure game elements to very young players.  My estimate is that it is best suited for 6-8 years old, although older players may have fun with the pop culture references and my terrible singing (I included a couple of snippets after first bursting into song in an adventure game in Fanbots!).  The game is fully voiced, albeit I voiced every character myself.

I have aimed (very approximately) for the graphical style of the Mr Men books and the writing / voice acting style of Danger Mouse.  Maybe if I do a sequel I can get Alexander Armstrong and Stephen Fry to voice some characters, just as Ali managed to get Tom Baker on board for Nelly Cootalot 2?!!  (Or... maybe not.)

Anyway, hopefully it's a bit of good educational fun.  You can get it on GameJolt.

The Soccer Player Manager 2016

Football gamers of a certain age - basically, around my age, which is too old to even contemplate for young folk, will definitely know and love the Kick Off games, and perhaps slightly less likely also remember Dino Dini and Steve Screech's other creation of sheer genius, Player Manager.  This was basically the Kick Off game engine with a simple football management built around it.  The result was a game that I played over and over again, taking my little town of Harlington into Division One (yes, it's that old, pre-Premier League!) and winning league after league, cup after cup, and snapping up all the best 18 year-old players in the first week of each season.  It was grand.

Now, thanks to the efforts of the Kick Off World team, that grandness can be relived on multiple formats.  There seem to be some tweaks from what I remember, the graphics and sound are based on the Amiga port (good decision!) and the match day engine seems to be built on the Kick Off 2 engine, and European games are included.  But despite the updates, this is an incredibly authentic recreation of Player Manager.

Check it out The Soccer Player Manager 2016 at

Supported formats include PC, Mac, Linux, iOS and Android.

I tried it on the Android but found the virtual joystick controls just too fiddly.  Still had fun watching dots chase each other round in the Fast version of playing the game when I played only as manager.  Did rather better on PC but naturally controlling by keyboard is no match for joystick or gamepad.

Haha... 4-0 down at Wigan, not my finest hour... to be fair all my best players were out injured.

Playing a struggling 3rd division outfit against Arsenal in the Cup... this was only going to end one way.   Took this screenshot before the goals came flooding in!

Every team should have at least one player called Garfunkel.

Just to prove that I actually had some better matches! :-D

Ouch... at least it wasn't on the icy part of the pitch though.

In Acaratus players build mechanized battle suits and fight to free an enslaved population. After winning Sweden’s Game Concept Challenge for independent developers, Nodbrim Interactive have secured funding to kick-start the development of Acaratus, where players’ strategic skills are put to the test in a beautiful, alternative Steampunk universe.

Screeps Team announces the release of its MMO RTS sandbox game on Steam Greenlight and start of the work on open-sourcing the game engine. A crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo has just been launched to fund the development of the game server that anyone can run.

Live browser demo (no registration required):!/sim

Screeps is an indie MMO RTS sandbox game for programmers, wherein the core mechanic is programming units AI. With all the attributes of a real strategy game, the player controls his colony by merely writing JavaScripts which operate 24/7 in the single persistent world filled by other players.

Screeps is developed for people with programming skills. Unlike some other RTS games, units in Screeps can react to events without the player's participation – provided that he has programmed them properly. And, unlike other MMO, one do not has to play Screeps constantly to play well. It is quite enough just to check once in a while to see if everything goes well.

* You play by writing JavaScript AI which controls your units 24/7 even while you're offline.
* All players coexist in the same real-time persistent world.
* Units, base, mining resources, territory control, economy, manufacturing, transporting, logistics, trading – all the attributes of a real strategy game which you need to program.

* An option to create your own local world and play with friends.

The MMO part of the game is subscription-based with a flat monthly fee. The Steam version will allow to connect either to the MMO world or to your own local world.

Epistory Arrives on PC March 30

Mons, Belgium - Feb. 24, 2016 - Epistory's atmospheric adventure will come to Windows, Mac and Linux on March 30, 2016 when Fishing Cactus releases the game onto Steam.

Inspired by origami, the Japanese art of folding paper, Epistory's narrative-driven gameplay begins in a blank paper-white world.  Players assumes the role of a narrator, telling the story of a young girl riding a majestic fox. As the heroine explores the world around her, more of the map opens up, literally unfolding into a magical land tinged with darkness.

The aesthetic approach to presentation earned Epistory an IGF honorable mention for Excellence in Visual Art as well as the Innovation Award at the Belgian Game Awards.

Every action the player takes, from controlling the heroine to navigating menus, is completed through intuitive keyboard controls. Foes are vanquished and puzzles are solved by typing a word, or string of words, associated with them. As the game progresses new mechanics are introduced such as entering words in a specific order or at certain speeds.

Spells provide the heroine with the ability to access areas of the world which would otherwise be inaccessible and can be used in combat, giving an edge in particularly difficult fights. Fire spells burns away the next word needed to type for a foe. Ice spells freeze enemies in their place.

Epistory has two game modes. The core of the game, Story Mode, allows players to explore the expanding world with the heroine and her fox. Arena mode provides competitive players a way to compete for the top score on the leaderboards by testing their talents against an endless onslaught of enemies.

"Epistory's beautiful origami inspired aesthetic and innovative approach to controls makes it stand out," says Bruno Urbain, CEO, Fishing Cactus. "but the moving metastory and dramatic conclusion will make Epistory one of 2016's hits."

Epistory is currently available in early access on Steam for $12.99 USD.  The first half of the game is playable with the second half coming at launch.

More information about Epistory can be found at
