Steam release date and New Trailer for Dawn of Fantasy

Toronto, Canada – 27/03/2013 Indie MMORTS game Dawn of Fantasy: Kingdom Wars will soon become the latest 'Greenlit' title to be released on Steam. Since the game was voted onto Steam by the game playing community back in November through Steam's Greenlight project, Dawn of Fantasy's developer Reverie World Studios has been working hard on adding various new features in time for the Steam release. Now, after working with Valve, the release date for Dawn of Fantasy: Kingdom Wars has been set as April 1st 2013, and, no, this is not an early April Fool's Day joke.

"All of us at Reverie are thrilled about this latest move and are grateful for the support of Valve and the Steam community," stated Executive Producer Konstantin Fomenko, "Release on the Steam platform will be an important next step in our continuous development of this indie game."

A new trailer for Dawn of Fantasy: Kingdom Wars has been released ahead of the game's launch on Steam. Featuring all in-game footage, this trailer shows off some of the new features and visual improvements that we added to Dawn of Fantasy over the past several months. In addition this trailer gives players preview of features still to come - like Naval Combat and Magic.

The developers have also made a commitment that existing players will be able to activate the game on Steam without any additional purchase. A spokesperson for Reverie World Studios has stated that instructions for how players can activate the game on Steam will be available from the developer's website closer to release.

Dawn of Fantasy: Kingdom Wars is a persistent online RTS with MMO, RPG and city builder elements, set in a fantasy world where humans, elves, orcs, dwarves and dragons battle for supremacy. Players build up cities and armies, gather and trade resources, complete quests, unlock achievements and fight in co-op and pvp battles.

The game will release on Steam on April 1st 2013 with language support for English, French, German, Italian, Spanish and Polish.

Guns of Icarus Adventure Mode Kickstarter

Muse Games prepares to open the skies for PvE Adventures on PC, Mac, and Linux!

March 26, 2013 – Kicking off live from the show floor at PAX East last weekend, Muse Games (www.gunsoficarus.com) has once again turned to Kickstarter to launch the next phase of its revolutionary airship combat game, Guns of Icaurs Online. The expansion, Guns of Icarus Online: Adventure Mode, takes the game’s unique team-based PvP battle system and places it in a fully realized persistent world, keeping the co-operative elements and expanding the game to include PvE, massive AI-controlled enemy ships, biplanes, missions, player progression, and a dynamic system of towns and player factions that evolves day by day as players actively affect and shape the world. Find out more athttp://www.kickstarter.com/projects/musegames/guns-of-icarus-onlineadventure-mode

Adventure Mode has three fundamental pillars, each with its own funding target and each building on the previous goals. These are:

  • AI Director: At the heart of a good PvE experience is a smart, responsive AI that can go toe-to-toe with players and scale up or down on the fly to keep the experience challenging and entertaining. This pillar will enable the creation of co-op and solo missions to complement competitive PvP.
  • Socio-Economic System: Adventure mode will add a world map of towns and trade routes, with six player factions and a fully dynamic resource economy. Missions are generated dynamically to help or hinder the towns and the factions that control them, depending on their circumstances and needs. Completing missions earns status in certain quarters and notoriety in others, enabling players to rise in the ranks of their chosen faction, unlock new opportunities and perks, and exert an even greater influence over the world.
  • World-Building Tools: A robust toolset is necessary to build an expansive world map with diverse and varied environments. This pillar involves the creation of new tools and processes to speed up the development of new maps and locales using a combination of procedural generation and manual composition. While the existing PvP maps have all been assembled painstakingly by hand, worldbuilding on the scale of Adventure Mode will require a whole new way of doing things.

Just four days into the campaign, Muse Games is already well past 25% of the way to the first funding goal. In addition to numerous digital goodies, physical swag, and exclusive rewards, Kickstarter backers can gain access to the currently released game on Steam (Skirmish Mode), as well as Adventure Mode upon its release! Take flight with Muse Games at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/musegames/guns-of-icarus-onlineadventure-mode

Unity Technologies Releases Facebook Functionality Update to Unity 4

SAN FRANCISCO, CA - March 26th, 2013 -  Unity Technologies, provider of the Unity multi-platform engine and development tools, today announced its collaboration with Facebook to launch an improved Unity experience on the social platform. The collaboration will improve the user experience of Unity games, continue to drive core games that build on the Unity Web Player, and make it easy for developers to build amazing cross-platform experiences.

With over 200 million global installs, the Unity Web Player is the best solution for core games and AAA visuals on the web, making the collaboration with Facebook a natural fit. Unity’s construction of a new social network API in the Unity Web Player has enabled Facebook to improve the “full screen” and the “full canvas” experience of Unity games by eliminating the need to leave full screen for social interaction, and to make it easier for developer to integrate tightly with Facebook’s social graph. Over 75m active Facebook users have installed the Unity Web Player to enjoy popular Unity games such as Offensive Combat, Robot Rising, Wizard of Oz, Uberstrike, Kings Bounty and I AM Playr. The new integrations will help make these existing experiences better while laying the foundation for further Unity Web Player adoption and feature expansion.

“The Unity Web Player is an incredible browser based platform for core games”, said Sean Ryan, Director of Games Partnerships, Facebook, “People on Facebook are looking for the type of immersive games that have traditionally existed on consoles and desktop PCs. This collaboration will drive discovery of the Unity Web Player for Facebook users, make it easier for Unity games to integrate with Facebook, improve the full-screen experience on our games platform, and make it easier for these developers to build cross platform games across desktop and mobile."

"The experience of playing a Unity game in Facebook is vastly improved in Unity 4, and working with Facebook makes it even better,” said David Helgason, CEO of Unity Technologies. “We are already seeing an amazing crop of quality games coming to Facebook, and can’t wait to see how developers make use of this new opportunity."

As an addition to the recently released Unity 4.1 update, Unity 4.1.1 includes the new social network API. Unity 4.1 includes a complete overhaul of the Memory Profiler, updates to the Mecanim Animation system, Apple AirPlay support, and new shader features. Agawi’s B2B2C Platform Brings Top Indie PC Game Developers On Board to Reach Exponentially Growing Tablet Audience, With Zero Work for Devs

Agawi announces content partnerships with Daedalic Entertainment, Teotl Studios, NinjaBee and other indie PC developers to bring their games to Android tablets and tap into new revenue streams—no SDK needed

(Source: WEBWIRE)

 Thursday, March 21, 2013

Today Agawi is introducing its new indie game developer partners that are bringing their top PC titles to Agawi on Android in April, and later, to the iPad. With tablets drawing more and more of the gaming market—and 240 million new tablets expected to ship this year—Agawi lets PC developers bring their titles to a huge new audience with no additional work or rewriting code required. Joining Agawi’s platform to reach this sizable market requires zero effort for indie developers, with no SDK or upfront investments, and it offers the opportunity for developers to tap into a new stream of incremental revenue.

Indie developers like Teotl Studios are now joining Agawi’s platform to bring hit titles, including Teotl’s award-winning game Unmechanical, to millions of new devices. "When Unmechanical came out last year, we were amazed by all the positive feedback the game received from critics and fans,” said Sjoerd De Jong from Teotl Studios. “We’re excited to utilize the Agawi platform to bring Unmechanical to the Android tablet market in a fast and efficient way"

Agawi offers flexible revenue options for the developer, with a range of different prices and rental alternatives.

"As Daedalic continues to introduce its critically-acclaimed games series across new platforms and offer them through new distribution channels, we’re very happy to partner with Agawi, whose cloud gaming platform allows us to deliver our award-winning Deponia title to the millions of users of tablets" said Sergei Klimov, director of international business development at Daedalic Entertainment. "The availability of different rental models and the fact that we can set the prices on our own makes this partnership very interesting for independent studios like us, and we look forward to bringing more titles to this platform in the near future"

One of the most unique features of Agawi is that it doesn’t require developers to write any new code or do porting to make their games compatible with various platforms and devices, as would be required by a game engine.

“As an indie developer, it’s really important for us to be thinking about where our games are going to reach a maximum audience,” said MiniBoss founder Pedro Medeiros. “Agawi is helping us reach players across platforms and devices. We’re proud to be a part of their platform launch and to see our title, Out There Somewhere, reach hundreds of millions of tablet users without any investment on our part.”

Bringing games to tablets via Agawi is an ideal way for PC developers to expand their business without making sacrifices. A recent survey of game developers attending the 2013 Game Developers Conference reported that nearly half of developers are still choosing to code specifically for PC. Agawi lets developers quickly jump onto new devices while continuing to develop for PC.

“Agawi’s new service is the perfect fit for NinjaBee, since it allows us to focus on what we do best: creating high quality games like A Kingdom for Keflings without having to worry about porting or rewriting any code,” said Andrew Hill, director of marketing and PR at NinjaBee. “Now, with Agawi, we can tap into new revenue steams and reach the rapidly growing tablet market with essentially no extra work. It’s really a win-win for developers.”

This ease of distributing games, in addition to the speedy streaming and high quality graphics supported by Agawi partners NVIDIA and Marvell, makes Agawi the most accessible and seamless choice for PC developers looking to grow to new devices.

“Neko is proud to have Puddle on board for the launch of Agawi’s new cloud gaming service,” said Neko Entertainment business development manager Cedric Bache. “Agawi will deliver the same high quality gaming experience that gamers have on PC, Mac, Linux and consoles to tablets.”

“As a publisher focused on bringing a catalogue of independent games to the wider marketplace, KISS is always excited to find new, cost-effective ways to get our games into the hands of consumers,” said Darryl Still, founder of KingStill International Software Services. “The Agawi solution is an innovative and fresh approach to cloud gaming, with no work required on our part to get hit games like Darkout to our gamers on new devices. We are delighted to come on board as a launch partner.”

In addition to the developers above, Agawi has also teamed up with Or1go Games, developer of A.R.E.S.: Extinction Agenda; Plug In Digital with WRC 3; and Crankshaft Games with Party of Sin.

“With these outstanding developers and publishers coming to Agawi, we are thrilled to give passionate game makers a flexible, capable and far-reaching platform to deliver diverse gaming experiences to players wherever they want to play,” said Agawi chairman Peter Relan. “We’re always looking for new great games and partners to join us.”

Independent developers interested in bringing their games to new devices on Agawi should contact  .

Agawi will be at the Independent Games Summit at GDC on March 25 and 26 and at booth 131 in the North Hall March 27-29, as well as co-hosting the Indie Games Summit Mixer on March 26 at 5:30pm. Agawi reps will be happy to speak with potential new partners at the conference as well as give demos.

MS-DOS poised to make a major come-back in gaming!! (Well... sort of.)

From indie dev Bryan Lundyke:

I present to you the most ridiculous technology story of the year:

Linux Tycoon -- the popular game where players simulate building their own version of Linux -- has been ported to DOS.

Yes.  That DOS.  MS-DOS.  The one that nobody has used in the last 20 years.

This is not a joke.

Full story, including screenshots and a most triumphant video where Linux and MS-DOS fall in love:

http://lunduke.com/?p=4254

The complete insanity of porting any game to DOS in the year 2013 aside... there is one great benefit.  People can now play the game on Android, iOS, OS/2, Haiku-OS, Maemo, FreeBSD and a bunch of other platform through the power of DOS emulation.  Nifty right?

Taking a Schein to this indie game...

I stumbled across a post about this indie game and thought it looked interesting, so I'm giving it a shout-out here:

Schein puts the player into the role of a troubled young man, who has lost his only son. Struggling to deal with his grief, he finds himself wandering through a dark, menacing swamp. He tries to find a way out, but is confronted with obstacles he cannot overcome. Just as he is about to give up, a spark of hope arrives in form of a ghost light named Irrlicht. With the power of the Irrlicht, he can bathe his surroundings in different lights and thus discover new paths. Learn to use these lights and your wits to trigger mechanisms, solve puzzles and defend yourself against dreadful creatures.

Key features
  • Mysterious dimensions: Use different colors of light to unveil new dimensions and manipulate your environment. Discover new paths, avoid hazards and learn to trigger mechanisms to overcome obstacles.
  • Brain-twister: Use your ingenuity and take advantage of the light to solve complex puzzles and continue your journey through the swamp.
  • Ingenious Soundtrack: Our exciting, specially commissioned soundtrack builds up suspense and creates an eerie atmosphere. Crank it up and immerse yourself even deeper in the mysterious world of Schein.
  • Mighty monsters: Ancient creatures inhabit the swamp and are not easily persuaded to let you pass. Use what you have learned on your journey to defeat them and gain new powers.
  • Lost souls: Throughout the swamp linger the souls of other adventurers who have perished. Collect these softly glowing orbs to unlock secret levels.
  • Gripping Story: Discover the tale of the magical swamp and the journey of the witty main characters in fully synchronized dialogues and cut scenes.
