Limburgerhof, Germany - smuttlewerk today is pleased to announce their new and upcoming game, Companions. "Companions" is a top-view "RPG/Dungeon Crawler" for Apple's iPad, where you lead a team of four characters into real-time battles against the false god "Detexx" and the "Hordes of Nether". The game is playable as a campaign with a full-fledged storyline or as a single-map experience, packed with achievements and leaderboards (Gamecenter & OpenFeint). Both modes are single player only.

The game contains elements of "Roguelike" and "Dungeon-Crawler" games, as well as RPG and action-tactics elements. Maps and characters are displayed in 2D top-view. The characters have skills. Like other RPG's these skills utilize a cooldown mechanism, so timing is very important. These skills get better if the player chooses to level them up. The clever use of the skills is one of the core play elements.

Each race and class favours different weapons and combat techniques:
* The Minotaur is apt in close combat fighting
* The Dwarf builds traps and tower structures
* The Elf uses her deadly long-range weapons
* The Human is gifted with powerful magic spells

There are three classes available for each race and every class has unique skills and bonuses. Each class plays differently, so lots of replay value is guaranteed. The map sizes vary from huge to small. Different goals on each map lead to different experiences of how the game is played. Sometimes portals leading to the nether-plane must be closed, other times survival for a given time is the objective, to mention just two.

The game is played in real time, but through the use of the tactical pause you are able to issue orders to your characters while the enemies are paused. Enemy creatures vary in type and strength. Some are quick, some cumbersome, while others favour ranged combat instead of close in fighting. Bosses usually have special skills of their own, making them especially deadly.

Feature List
* Lots of enemy creatures
* Challenging Boss fights
* Fine artwork
* Rewarding battles
* Powerful items
* 4 player races
* Level up 34 unique skills
* Tactical pause option
* Different play styles
* High replay value
* Engaging story

3 classes for each race:
* Minotaur: Berserker, Gladiator, Bull
* Elf: Assassin, Archer, Ranger
* Dwarf: Engineer, Draftsman, Miner
* Human: Light, Matter, Void

Localization
The game will be published in English and German. Other languages will be integrated after the game has been released.

Release Date
The game will be released in May 2011. The release will feature the campaign mode with an engaging story line and a survival mode featuring achievements and leaderboards.

Level Artist Adam Matera explained why Gnomic chose Windows Phone for their next release. “Having released Square Off for Xbox Live Indie Games, we were looking for a smaller project to develop before starting on a larger game." he said. San Diego, CA – February 25, 2011Black Chicken Studios is delighted to present our sixth free DLC for Academagia: The Making of Mages, A Friend in Need!

Unlooked for, in the final hour before the ships sailed to the Onyx Isles, the host of King Morvoldr came out of the mists of the north, axes ready in their hands and war-beasts at their sides. Having heard the rumor of King Durand in even his far-off kingdom, Morvoldr would not allow the men of Rimerta to sail into the unknown east friendless. Such was the generous friendship of the northmen that they came without promise of treasure or the consolation of pride, for they knew and valued the sacrifices that had been made without them.

But are there limits on friendship, and the high costs it can incur?

This DLC includes:
·         7 new Adventures, set around the College of Morvidus: more than one plea for aid awaits!
·         20+ new Events, dealing with the fellowship and fortitude of the Students of Morvidus
·         1 new Skill, over 15 Items, and lots of new Abilities, Actions, Locations and Spells for new ways to establish your Character in Elumia

Additionally, Mod Tools are now available so that players can create their own stories, mysteries and magic!

Academagia: The Making of Mages retails for $24.95 and includes all the fun and adventure of the original game with all new content from College Morvidus: A Friend in Need! as well as our five previous free content releases. It is available from www.academagia.com as well as through digital distribution at Beamdog, GamersGate and Impulse.

Secrets of Da Vinci is a Point & Click adventure game and is the first ever game created about the life and work of Leonardo Da Vinci. Players come to discover and delve inside the mysteries surrounding the hidden enigmas of the works of the great genius. Secrets of Da Vinci is a major investigation and adventure game, a thrilling mystical quest into the heart of the Renaissance.

Valdo, an ambitious young apprentice working for Da Vinci's disciple Francesco Melzi, is extremely disappointed when the scholar suddenly dismisses him. However, shortly afterwards, he receives a letter from a mysterious patron, asking him to locate one of the great master's missing codices. To access Da Vinci's last residence, the Manoir du Cloux near Ambroise, Valdo tells its new occupant, a courtesan by the name of Babou de la Bourdaisiere, that he is Francesco Melzi's apprentice and that he wishes to examine the inventions that still remain on the estate.

Under this cover, he starts to scour the estate: Babou's bedroom, Leonardo's workshop, the grounds, and dovecot, leaving no stone unturned. In the course of his investigations, he encounters a wide array of intriguing characters: Babou herself, Saturnin, a suspicious looking guardian, and the King of France himself. To accomplish his mission, he has to solve a series of enigmas devised by the great master himself if Da Vinci's inventions are to function again. On the trail of the genius, Valdo is no more aware of the secrets he is about to unveil as of the danger lurking in the dark.

Instead of listing separate services for websites, game text and other documentation, all text is now considered under the same pricing plan. There are now two levels of proofreading on offer - a basic "filler" text service at $1 per 100 words, ideal for simple text such as button labels or basic description, and a more advanced "descriptive" package at $2 per 100 that also rewrites text where required.

    (2) Press releases have also been streamlined. The clearly most popular service has been the creative press release, so from now on this is the only release we will write. We are happy to do a "straight" release or something unusual and eye-catching as requested. You are also welcome to write your own release and submit it for proofreading under the standard packages, of course, which may work out more cost effective.

    (3) We are now offering a name checking service. Choosing the right name for your product is always a difficult task, and when selecting a name in a non-native language there is always a risk that you'll pick something that doesn't mean quite what you think it does. Provide us with a list of ideas and we'll consider and comment on them all, select the best ones and offer alternative suggestions where appropriate.

    (4) Finally, we're now offering a creative writing service, designed to offer short plot and character description or general background to your game or product. You provide the basic details, what sort of style you're looking for and how many words, and we'll write something up.

    IndieGameNews.Com reaches its first anniversary!

    Well, one year ago yesterday I made the very first post on this blog. Since then we've had (according to Google Analytics):

    • 20,996 Visits
    • 17,039 Absolute Unique Visitors
    • 34,430 Pageviews

    (Blogger's own stats are different - still not sure why. Maybe they count pings and bots too?)

    Anyway, it's not quite worked out as I'd planned / imagined; I envisaged more posts by my collaborators and more "behind the scenes" type posts, but everyone's too busy actually making their games to post much here (which is of course good, in a way!).  It's ended up being much more a news-oriented site, which I suppose isn't really too much of a problem considering we're actually called Indie Game News!

    We had a grand total of 864 posts altogether in the first year.

    Breakdown of posts according to system / format:

    pc (249) iphone (238) ipad (190) ipod touch (154) mac (93) xbox (25) linux (22) android (15) amiga (10) flash (8) PS3 (7) Windows 7 phone (3) dsi (3) facebook (3) samsung bada (3) wii (3) html5 (2) netbook (2) psp (2) osx (1)

    (I have a good source of iOs game news which is why iPhone, iPad and iPod are so well represented!  I'd like more news about the less well represented formats, especially Xbox, Wii and PS3, so if you've got an indie game for one of those systems that you'd like a mention of here, please email me.)

    Breakdown of posts by game genre:

    Breakdown of posts by article type:

    We currently have about 100 visits per day and approximately 160 page views per day on average.  It's been steadily increasing and I hope will continue to do so - not that I think we'll ever really challenge the big indie game blogs for visitors, but it would be nice to think that at some stage indie developers feel like it's a big deal to get a mention here.  Thanks to everyone who's visited the site, contributed a blog post, sent news, done  an interview or review, linked to us, or helped in any other way during the first year.  Special thanks go to Chris Park of Arcen Games and Simone Bevilacqua (creator of indie game BOH) for their help from back when this blog was nothing but a vague idea I wanted to develop.

    So... here's to indiegamenews.com's second year in existence!

    Bullseye Gets Competitive on Kongregate

    Interstellar Marines: Bullseye is now available on Kongregate.

    At an undisclosed location in the solar system, a small group of elite soldiers in the ITO Special Forces has been selected to undergo the first part of their training to become Interstellar Marines. Transported to the military space carrier AIV Kitty Hawk, these aspiring marines are given their first task: successfully complete a challenging live fire exercise on a dynamic shooting range designed to improve combat proficiency with the standard issue MeiKuy CE-6 submachine gun. Passing this step will qualify soldiers to enter the Interstellar Marines program.

    This is the scenario that has been captivating thousands of players, who have completed over 1 million challenges thus far in Bullseye, the popular online shooting experience from the independent game developer Zero Point Software. Beginning the 15th of February, millions of new gamers will have a chance to test their own shooting prowess with a special version of Bullseye on the world famous gaming site Kongregate.com.

    Through Kongregate, gamers will have access to 22 grueling challenges in Bullseye, ranging from basic shooting of moving targets, to intense breaching exercises and hostage situations. As Bullseye players progress through 16 character levels, their standard issue SMG can be upgraded and customized in order to reach perfect scores in all challenges, so they can compare their skills with their friends on high-scores.

    In addition, Bullseye has been entered into a contest on Kongregate.com that features the best new browser-based titles developed in Unity, an award-winning game engine. Bullseye will be competing for a grand prize of 10,000 USD.

Now that Kongregate has added support for Unity games, we have the opportunity to do just that,” said Game Director Kim Haar Jørgensen. “It will be exciting to see how Kongregate’s discerning users receive the game, and we hope that they’ll give us a good ranking in the competition—even though there are some great games out there!”
